Northumberland Ferries Limited, regional leader in thetransportation industry, is seeking an Exempt Captain, Non-Union, to workonboard our vessels that operate from the ports of Wood Islands, PE, andCaribou, NS. The Exempt Captain will be responsible for the SafeNavigation, and the ship handling of the vessel for the docking and undockingmultiple times daily. The Captain has overall responsibility to implementthe Company’s Management System as per the ISM Code on board the ship that isunder their command.
Education, Experienceand Certification:
The ideal candidate will have experience in navigatingRo-Pax vessels in confined or narrow water ways and in shallow water.Experience with Azimuth thrusters, Controllable Pitch Propellers and BeckerFlap Rudders is an asset.
- Master,Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or higher.
- ContinuedProficiency Endorsement.
- SeafarersMedical Certificate.
- RadioOperator Certificate.
- Certificatesof Proficiency in STCW Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats otherthan Fast Rescue Boats, and Advanced Fire Fighting.
- ContinuousCertificate of Discharge (Discharge Book).
- SpecializedPassenger Safety Management (Certificate or Endorsement).
Key Accountabilities: Specific Management Systemresponsibilities include:
- Implementingthe Safety and Environmental Protection Policy.
- Motivatingthe crew to observe and execute the policy.
- Issuingappropriate orders and instructions clearly and simply.
- Regularlyreviewing and updating the Company’s Management System and reportingdeficiencies to shore-based management.
- Reportinghazardous occurrences and accidents and ensuring measures to preventreoccurrence are identified and implemented.
- Ensuringcrew compliance with secure working practices and procedures.
- Conductingmonthly health and safety meetings.
- ConductingDaily Toolbox Talks with crew.
- Encouragingcrew to report near-misses by supporting a culture that does not focus onblame.
- Performingrisk assessments and job hazard analyses to ensure safe shipboardoperating practices and procedures are in place.
- Maintaincurrent records of training and crew certifications.
- Demonstratea commitment to maintaining a just-cause safety culture.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Strongwritten, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledgeof vessel operating processes, procedures, and technology.
- Conflictresolution skills.
- WHMISis required (Company provided training).
- Accessibilitytraining is required (Company provided training).
- WorkplaceHarassment and Violence Prevention Training is required (Company providedtraining).
