About The Role MassMutual’s AI & Data Science team is seeking an impact-driven Lead AI Engineer to join our high-performing, cross-functional team. In this strategic role, you will be responsible for leading the design, deployment, and scaling of advanced AI solutions that address complex, high-value challenges across the enterprise.
You will architect and implement generative AI, agentic AI, and large language model (LLM)-based systems by applying rigorous scientific methods, writing high-quality production code, and effectively communicating results to senior leadership. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of AI within the organization and the broader life insurance industry.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of experience in data science, machine learning, or AI engineering, with a proven track record of delivering impactful AI/ML solutions at scale. Deep expertise in machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), and large language models (LLMs) is essential, including experience with generative AI, agentic architectures,
prompt engineering, and model evaluation.
Strong programming skills in Python, along with familiarity with deployment frameworks such as Docker and Kubernetes, are required. An advanced degree such as a Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent qualified experience.
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and lead end-to-end AI solutions supporting various enterprise use cases—from ideation through production deployment and monitoring—using LLMs, agentic AI, machine learning, and probabilistic modeling, ensuring reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Design and conduct rigorous evaluations of AI system performance, including experimentation, benchmarking across foundation models, and quantitative analysis to validate approaches and guide technical decisions.
- Drive innovation by identifying emerging technologies, translating cutting-edge research into practical applications, and establishing best practices for responsible AI development and deployment within the team.
- Develop rapid prototypes to test and validate AI approaches, delivering production-grade AI-powered applications such as intelligent interfaces, dashboards, and automated workflows.
- Collaborate closely with engineering teams to develop robust,
scalable AI pipelines and APIs that seamlessly integrate into the broader enterprise technology ecosystem.
- Engage with senior leadership to align AI initiatives with enterprise strategy, effectively communicating complex technical concepts and actionable insights.
- Mentor and develop junior team members, fostering a culture of scientific rigor, technical excellence, and continuous learning.
