About The Role The Lead Data Engineer at McKesson is a senior individual contributor within the Decision Intelligence organization, responsible for leading the design, development, and operational management of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Services (PSaS) Business Unit. This role combines technical expertise with strategic leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver high-quality data products that enable advanced analytics and decision-making.
As a key player in the team, you will oversee end-to-end technical delivery of complex data initiatives, influence architectural decisions, and ensure the implementation of best practices in data engineering. You will serve as a technical leader, guiding a team of data engineers, and working closely with data scientists, analysts, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into scalable, reliable data solutions. Your contributions will directly impact the company's ability to leverage data for strategic insights, operational efficiency, and innovative AI/ML applications.
This role requires a proactive approach to identifying technical debt, ensuring operational stability, and promoting automation and reusability in data pipelines. You will also be responsible for communicating technical designs, risks,
and outcomes clearly to stakeholders at all levels, fostering a data-driven culture within the organization.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments. A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience, with a strong track record of leading complex technical initiatives independently, is essential. Proven experience in influencing technical direction and mentoring engineers without formal management responsibilities is highly valued.
Deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT processes, and large-scale data processing is required. Candidates should possess excellent stakeholder communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams. A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience, is typically expected.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring solutions meet business needs and technical standards.
- Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise.
- Design and build scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems, ensuring data integrity and performance.
- Collaborate with Data Architects and enterprise teams to influence and define architectural decisions and data strategy.
- Establish and uphold engineering standards, best practices, and patterns aligned with enterprise data governance and strategy.
- Mentor and review the work of data engineers,
providing technical coaching, code reviews, and design feedback.
- Ensure the quality, performance, and long-term maintainability of data products, including testing and operational readiness.
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into effective data solutions.
- Promote automation, reusability, and efficiency in data engineering solutions, supporting advanced analytics and machine learning use cases.
- Oversee monitoring, observability, and operational stability of data pipelines, proactively addressing issues and technical debt.
- Communicate complex technical concepts, trade-offs, and risks clearly to stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making.
