Crux Energy Consulting
Canada
Crux Energy Consulting builds the analysis to help utilities and energy companies figure out what to do next. We work with boards, executive teams, and cross-functional teams of financial professionals, engineers, lawyers, and more on topics like affordability, regulatory strategy, scenario planning, capital project risk, and partnership decisions. We're a small, senior team, and rely on each other to build and deliver the best product for our clients.
The role
You would work directly with our CEO and COO on client engagements from start to finish. In practice, this might include:
- Building financial and analytical models from scratch to answer questions no one has modelled before. Models like capital and affordability scenario analysis, rate and revenue impacts, sensitivity testing, and jurisdictional comparisons.
- Turning that analysis into something an executive team or board can act on. At Crux Energy we fundamentally believe the story is just as important as the math behind it.
- Researching regulatory filings, tariffs, and market data across North American jurisdictions. You should be comfortable digging for the answer and be efficient at getting it.
- Preparing pre-read materials, facilitation guides, and post-session summaries for executive and board workshops.
- Project managing long-term engagements and coordinating deliverables across a wide array of professionals like lawyers, engineers, and accountants.
- Drafting proposals, thinking through scope and effort, and helping us decide which opportunities are the right fit for the organization.
Crux Energy Consulting is a boutique firm. No task should feel too big or too small for you. Some days will be filled with client work and analytics and other days might include updating the company website. In most cases, you’re figuring out an approach or a tool that we haven’t used before, or changing an approach we all thought was great last month.
What we're looking for
- 5–10 years of experience post-designation (CPA, MBA, and/or CFA).
- Fluency in the Canadian energy and utility sector. You understand how a regulated utility makes money, what a rate case is, and why the difference between a MW and a MWh matters in a technical conversation.
- Analytical prowess. You aren’t interested in maintaining someone else's model. You are fluent in back-of-the-napkin math and make it easy to get a defensible number.
- Strong visual and narrative instincts. You can take dense analyses and make a decision-maker understand the crux of it in thirty seconds. You deeply care about how slides and storylines are presented and have excellent written and spoken English.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a habit of learning. Most of our engagements are things we haven't done in exactly that shape before. If the phrase "I'll figure it out" or “leave it with me” works for you, you’ll probably work well with us.
Terms
- Full time, permanent. Remote from anywhere in Canada. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Minimal travel. Compensation commensurate with experience.
