Our Client
Our client is one of Canada's leading defined benefit pension plans, with a significant investment portfolio spanning traditional and alternative asset classes and a long-term investment horizon.
As part of the continued evolution of its investment strategy, the organization is establishing a dedicated commodities investment platform to identify and capture opportunities across global commodity markets, while leveraging commodity market expertise to inform strategic positioning and investment decisions across the total fund.
Position Overview The organization is seeking an MD or Senior Portfolio Manager to establish and lead this new investment platform. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, this role will have a dual mandate: generating alpha through the capital markets program and providing commodity market expertise to inform strategic positioning and portfolio construction across the total fund, while applying a total portfolio approach.
The platform will also leverage a highly selective network of external investment partners to enhance market intelligence, challenge investment views and provide differentiated insights that complement the organization's internal investment capabilities.
The successful candidate will have deep experience designing and leading a commodity mandate from a strategic perspective, with a proven track record of generating returns through fundamental investing, tactical positioning and disciplined risk-taking.
This is a significant opportunity for a seasoned Portfolio Manager with deep expertise in commodity investment strategies to establish and lead a new commodities investment platform within a leading Canadian pension plan. The role offers the scope to build a differentiated investment capability, generate alpha, influence strategic positioning and portfolio construction across the total fund, and build and lead a high-performing team.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the organization's commodities investment strategy, ensuring alignment with capital markets objectives, TPA priorities, risk appetite and governance requirements.
- Provide commodity market expertise and strategic insights to support portfolio construction and investment decisions across the total fund.
- Build and manage a diversified investment platform spanning direct commodity exposures, commodity-related equities and credit, quantitative and directional strategies, utilizing a broad range of instruments including futures, options, swaps, ETFs and other derivatives, as well as external partnerships.
- Identify, evaluate and execute high-conviction investment opportunities across energy, metals and broader commodity markets through fundamental, quantitative, macroeconomic and geopolitical analysis.
- Develop and maintain a targeted external partnership network that extends the capabilities of the internal team through differentiated market insight, idea generation and strategic perspective.
- Partner closely with investment, risk, legal, operational and tax teams to ensure effective implementation of the strategy.
- Build, mentor and lead a high-performing team of investment professionals.
- Contribute to enterprise-wide investment discussions through active participation in senior leadership forums and cross-functional initiatives.
Desired Qualifications
- 15+ years of institutional investment experience, including significant experience investing across commodity markets and cycles.
- Deep expertise in energy and/or metals markets, supported by a demonstrated track record of generating investment returns across market environments.
- Proven ability to generate alpha through strategic portfolio positioning and tactical investing.
- Strong understanding of the fundamental, quantitative, macroeconomic and geopolitical drivers of commodity markets.
- Experience investing across direct commodity exposures as well as commodity-related equity and credit opportunities.
- Demonstrated expertise in portfolio construction, risk management and governance within a large institutional investment environment.
- Experience building and managing investment platforms that combine internal strategies with selective external partnerships.
- Proven leadership experience building new investment capabilities or platforms from the ground up, including building and developing high-performing investment teams.
- Exceptional judgment, integrity, communication and stakeholder management skills.
