We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer & Builder to join our Engineering team. This is a hands-on engineering position combining mechanical design, CAD development, fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and equipment integration.

The Mechanical Designer & Builder is expected to independently complete most standard mechanical design and build assignments, from defined requirements through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, and testing.

The successful candidate will have strong SolidWorks/CAD skills, practical mechanical design experience, and hands-on machine-building capability. They should be able to develop solutions to routine and moderately complex mechanical problems and contribute meaningful ideas during conceptual design.

Key Responsibilities:

- Develop mechanical designs for custom automation equipment, test systems, fixtures, tooling, mechanisms, structures, enclosures, and material-handling systems.
- Translate project requirements and established concepts into complete mechanical designs.
- Create accurate 3D models, assemblies, layouts, manufacturing drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks.
- Develop mechanical components and subsystems independently.
- Select appropriate materials, fasteners, bearings, linear motion components, actuators, pneumatic components, and other mechanical hardware.
- Apply appropriate dimensions, tolerances, fits, and GD&T.;
- Design for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, cost, and reliability.
- Perform interference checks and design reviews before releasing drawings for fabrication.
- Identify potential mechanical problems early and recommend corrective solutions.
- Modify and improve existing designs based on manufacturing, testing, customer, and project requirements.

Conceptual Design & Problem Solving

- Participate actively in conceptual design and engineering brainstorming.
- Develop mechanical design concepts for technical reviews.
- Design practical mechanical solutions for defined functional requirements.
- Evaluate alternative concepts based on functionality, cost, manufacturability, reliability, and schedule.
- Develop preliminary layouts and mechanisms for standard automation applications.
- Identify design risks and communicate them to the Senior Designer or Engineering Manager.
- Solve routine and moderately complex mechanical problems independently.
- Seek guidance when problems require advanced engineering analysis or system-level design decisions.

Fabrication & Machine Building

- Build and assemble mechanical systems, fixtures, tooling, and automation equipment.
- Perform mechanical fabrication, fitting, drilling, tapping, cutting, fastening, alignment,

and adjustment as required.
- Interpret engineering drawings and ensure fabricated components meet design requirements.
- Work directly with machinists, fabricators, suppliers, and technicians to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Verify dimensions, fit, alignment, clearances, and functionality during assembly.
- Make appropriate design modifications to resolve fabrication and assembly issues.
- Maintain good housekeeping and follow applicable shop and workplace safety requirements.

Testing, Troubleshooting & Integration

- Participate in mechanical integration, testing, debugging, and commissioning of equipment.
- Independently troubleshoot routine mechanical problems.
- Diagnose issues involving alignment, motion, clearances, interference, structural integrity, vibration, pneumatic operation, and mechanical reliability.
- Work with Electrical and Software teams to resolve issues affecting integrated equipment.
- Support factory acceptance testing and customer-site commissioning when required.
- Document design changes and incorporate lessons learned into future designs.

Project Execution

- Take ownership of assigned mechanical components, subsystems, and projects.
- Develop and maintain design schedules for assigned work.
- Complete engineering deliverables according to project requirements and deadlines.
- Communicate design status, risks, technical issues, and required support to the project team.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Electrical, Software, and Project Management.
- Support supplier and customer technical discussions when required.

Documentation & Quality

- Prepare and maintain accurate mechanical drawings and BOMs.
- Follow company procedures for SolidWorks CAD standards, drawing conventions, revision-control procedures, and engineering processes.
- Review own work before submitting designs for engineering review.
- Minimize design errors, fabrication issues, and rework through effective design checking.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and revision history.
- Participate in design and quality reviews.

Required Qualifications

- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
- 3-9 years of relevant experience in mechanical design,

automation, manufacturing equipment, machine building, or a similar environment.
- Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks or an equivalent 3D CAD platform.
- Demonstrated ability to independently complete mechanical designs and assemblies.
- Good understanding of mechanical components, mechanisms, materials, machining, fabrication, and assembly.
- Good understanding of dimensions, tolerances, fits, and GD&T.;
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical fabrication and machine assembly.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience designing custom automation equipment or production machinery.
- Experience with electronics manufacturing test equipment and fixtures.
- Experience with pneumatic systems and actuators.
- Experience with linear motion systems, conveyors, robotics, motors, or gearboxes.
- Experience with sheet-metal and machined-part design.
- CNC machining, fabrication, welding, or other hands-on manufacturing experience.
- Experience with machine safety and risk assessment.
- Experience working with Electrical and Controls Engineers.
- Experience with equipment installation and customer-site commissioning.

Physical / Work Requirements

- Ability to work in both an office/CAD environment and a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to safely use mechanical hand and power tools.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work around machinery and equipment.
- Ability to lift and handle mechanical components within applicable workplace safety requirements.
- Ability to spend extended periods working at a computer workstation.
- Occasional travel to customer sites may be required for installation, commissioning, or troubleshooting.
