Overview The Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing innovative, accurate, and cost-
effective mechanical designs from concept through manufacturing and commissioning.
This role works closely with internal teams, fabrication shops, and customers to deliver high-quality solutions across ABCO’s four main industries: food processing, marine,
environmental, and industrial fabrication.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Create detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and bill of materials for manufacturing
- Develop conceptual designs and assist with proposals and technical sales support
- Prepare project cost estimates and assist with budgeting
- Coordinate projects across departments to ensure alignment and efficiency
- Collaborate with fabrication teams to optimize manufacturability and production
processes
- Perform quality checks to ensure designs meet company and customer standards
- Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation of installed
equipment
- Ensure all deliverables meet deadlines, specifications, and cost targets
Additional Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with customers during design, sales, and project execution
phases
- Contribute to the development and improvement of standard operating procedures
- Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and manufacturing methods
- Participate in team initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
- Provide support to other departments as needed
- Travel occasionally for site visits, commissioning, and customer support
Skills & Qualifications
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Design or related program required
- 2 + years’ mechanical design experience required. We are looking for individuals
of intermediate to senior skill level.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent)
- Robust understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering fundamentals
- Experience with fabrication processes (welding, machining, forming, etc.)
- Ability to produce and interpret detailed technical drawings
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
Preferred
- Experience in industrial equipment, food machinery, marine, or custom fabrication.
Working Conditions
Work Location/ Schedule
Full Time, Weekdays In person @ 81 Tannery Rd, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Work Environment
Office-based with regular interaction with fabrication and production teams. Occasional travel may be required for customer meetings, site support, and commissioning.
