YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE

We are looking for a Microbiologist 2 (Part Time) in #106- 8255 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, BC V3N OB9 CAN. Your mission will be to:

Purpose (Objective):

The incumbent prepares samples and maintains process documentation and performs microbiological analysis procedures. This position reports to the Operations Supervisor – Microbiology.

Main activities:

- Prepare media and broth for use in microbiological testing as designated. Sterilize materials needed for analysis. Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures and prepare samples for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending. Retrieve samples from designated areas (e.g. log-in, sample storage).
- Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed. Pour the agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process.
- Write identification onto plates so that client and sample number can be tracked. Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis.
- Collect plates/tubes/bags and place them in the incubator for the specified amount of time and temperature.
- Read plates and tubes, as designated, to determine the number of organisms in the sample. Record findings on worksheet for verification.
- Perform calculations and input results as requested.
- Read, enter and evaluate process control samples
- Perform confirmation tests on suspect plates or tubes to identify the strain of bacteria.
- Perform rapid method tests as designated.
- Analyze and approve client results.
- Interact with other department personnel to maintain smooth flow of work. Assist other departmental personnel with analysis procedures.
- Provide feedback and suggest process improvement changes. Provide instruction on the correct sample process.




- Maintain sufficient knowledge of Zeta and SMART systems to perform assigned tasks as well as train others in these systems.
- Maintain accurate quality control documentation of analysis procedures.
- Understand laboratory control chart data and DPC protocols to ensure that unsatisfactory data is identified and addressed appropriately. Assist lab management with addressing errors.
- Assist the lab management in the implementation/evaluation of new Microbiology methods.
- Educate and train departmental personnel on correct procedures and new analysis methods.
- Assist lab management in investigating lab issues related to process deviations and failures. Complete non-conformance root cause analysis and corrective actions documentation.
- Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities.
- This position has the responsibilities and authority to identify departures from the quality system or test procedures and document such observations in accordance with the prescribed complaint system.
- Responsibility to support laboratory management in the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the management system.
- Adhere to all safety policies.
- Perform necessary housekeeping duties in a timely manner, keeping the work areas and equipment clean and sanitized.
- Perform other related tasks as needed.

YOUR PROFILE

Knowledge:

Profile

- The position typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a related discipline such as Microbiology or Food Science with 2-5 years of relevant laboratory experience. The incumbent must have a broad knowledge of microbiology to perform analyses and interpret data.

Required skills:
- Basic chemistry knowledge is needed to prepare the media to the specification of the sample.
- A basic knowledge of food science is necessary to analyze the microbiological content of sample.
- Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism.
- A general knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System is required to process client data.




- Physical dexterity is required for measuring, pipetting and transferring sample into plates and tubes.
- A basic knowledge of personal computers is useful to accurately enter testing data and results.
- A basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment.
- Have a working knowledge of the internal IQA and TQM programs.
- Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Work Environment:
- The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control.
- Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory.
- Safety equipment of gloves, a laboratory coat, eyeglasses or other protective gear, may need to be worn depending on the testing process or equipment in use.
- The incumbent may use the autoclave daily to complete the analysis process.
- Continuous lifting of analysis materials weighing up to 50 pounds may be necessary.
- Work hours can vary according to the sample load of that particular day and may include weekends.
- Equipment such as autoclaves, stomachers, vortex, and water baths are used by this position.
- The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position.
- The incumbent should be able to detect slight variation in shades of colors.
- The incumbent must be able to handle all food matrices or other product types as received, within appropriate safety guidelines.
