Campus Security Services is a department within the Vice President Finance and Operations portfolio that provides security, personal safety, emergency planning, parking and motor pool services to the campus community at the University of Victoria. In providing these services Campus Security contributes to creating a safe, secure and welcoming campus for all and to the overall mission of the University by providing exceptional customer service in all aspects of the operation. These services of a critical nature are provided 24/7/365.
Campus Security Services serves a diverse client base including students, employees and visitors. The department's 46 employees work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery, as well as the effective, efficient and safe adherence to university policies. Together, we support UVic's vision to be a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty, and staff from Canada and around the world and to enhance UVic's reputation among the best universities in Canada and the world.
The University has a population that consists of almost 5000 employees as well as over 22,000 students and over 150 buildings on 163 hectares and 20 parking lots containing over 4200 stalls.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Parking & Commuter Services, the Parking Ambassador is directly responsible for enforcing the University's Traffic and Parking Regulations in a fair and impartial manner.
The Parking
Ambassador is responsible for patrolling University parking areas to ensure compliance, issuing parking citations, and liaising with clients to explain parking regulations and policies.
Experience
This position requires a level of experience equivalent to 2 years of experience working within a comparable environment.
- Bylaw or parking enforcement
- Work in a customer service environment
Specialized Knowledge/Education
- Grade 12 or equivalent
Skills/ Abilities
- Communicate clearly and effectively with others both verbally and in writing
- Articulate clear and concise directions while under stress
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to navigate contentious or sensitive issues with discretion while maintaining a high degree of professionalism and maintaining personal integrity
- Use initiative in dealing with and resolving problems with hostile clients in escalated, emotional situations.
- Ability to apply de-escalation skills when dealing with escalated persons
- Perform multiple tasks concurrently and switch priorities instantaneously.
- Pay attention to detail and accurately record documentation and information
- Ability to type 35 words per minute
- Work effectively as a member of a team or alone in a diverse, client service-oriented setting
- Effectively use standard office equipment and software {e.g. MS Office)
- Possess the mechanical ability to operate various devices as well as assist with preventative maintenance and minor repairs of parking equipment
- Work outside in varying types of weather
- Have the ability to differentiate vehicles by make, model, style, color and plate
- Carry out parking patrols on foot or in a vehicle
- Work a flexible shift schedule
- Must provide drivers abstract prior to the start of employment
- Must have the ability to maintain a Security Officer level security clearance
- Must have the ability to obtain a Criminal Record Check
