We are currently seeking two (2) Pen checkers to join our team! If you have a passion for cattle and thrive in a fast-paced environment, this is the opportunity for you.

Position Summary:

The Pen Checker plays a critical role in maintaining the health and welfare of feedlot cattle by conducting thorough daily checks of all pens. This position requires sharp observational skills, sound judgment in identifying sick or injured animals, and the ability to safely move cattle to treatment facilities. Pen Checkers ensure that animal health protocols are followed and that livestock well-being is always prioritized.

Key Responsibilities:

- Ride or walk through assigned pens daily to observe cattle behavior, eating habits, and physical condition.
- Identify and promptly pull sick, injured, or off-feed animals for treatment or further evaluation.
- Record observations and follow treatment protocols as directed by the livestock foreman or animal health team.

Cattle Handling:

- Safely move animals from pens to hospital facilities using proper low-stress handling techniques.
- Assist with pen moves, d-sorts, and hospital pen checks as needed.
- Maintain awareness of animal stress and minimize it during handling.

Record Keeping:

- Accurately document pulled animals, symptoms observed, and pen conditions.
- Communicate with processing and animal health crews regarding animal care needs.

Facility & Pen Monitoring:

- Report any issues related to pen maintenance, waterers, or fencing.
- Ensure pen conditions support animal comfort and safety.

Qualifications:





- Experience with cattle handling, feedlot operations, or ranching is required.
- Proficient horseback riding skills required; preference will be given to candidates who own a safe, reliable working horse.
- Must speak and understand English (verbal communication required for safety and coordination).
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of bovine health symptoms and animal behavior.
- Physically capable of riding, walking pens, lifting gates, and working in all types of weather.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow protocols with minimal supervision.
- Good communication and team collaboration skills.

Working Conditions:

- Outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions (cold, heat, wind, mud, dust).
- Early morning start times; occasional weekends or holidays may be required.
- Exposure to large animals and equipment.
- Fast-paced, high-responsibility environment focused on animal welfare and production efficiency.

Reports To: Feedlot Foreman / Assistant Feedlot Foreman
