We are looking for a part-time trainer to join our team at Custom Strength in Hintonburg (in Ottawa). We offer semi-private training primarily to adults, who tend to be one or more of:
- very active (runners, cyclists, skiers, ultimate players, tennis players, soccer players...)
- referred to us by their health care practitioner after an injury
- people who have never really done any formal exercise but realized it's time to start.
Semi-private means you will coach up to three people at a time. It is not group training, as you will coach each person through their own customized workout program that we put together for them. We know that coaching several people at a time takes some getting used to, and we accommodate that in our approach to training you. In other words, if you're used to one-on-one (but are interested in working with us), we will help you get used to semi-private training. Side note: it's way more fun than one-on-one. The training we provide is customized to each client based on their goals and their body, using a combination of strength and mobility training. We believe form is significant, as is finding a nice balance between challenging enough that people improve, but not so challenging that they get discouraged.
We have a team approach to creating and coaching such that a few of our current trainers write all the programs and program updates, following a training approach that has been significantly influenced by Mike Boyle, Mark Verstegen, Eric Cressey, Gray Cook, and Dr. Stuart McGill.
We believe that training in a fun and supportive environment is as important as creating a great workout: If people enjoy it, they’ll come back for more workouts, and that’s good for them and for us.
Job requirements (in no particular order):
- willing to learn
- smart
- nice
- not so shy that you can’t start conversations with people
- be able to spell my first name properly when you email or message me
- hold a certification (if you aren’t certified but are keen, I'd love to hear from you too).
- be legally entitled to work in Canada (are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or hold current and valid authorization to work as a personal trainer in Canada)
Perks:
- Our clients and other trainers are awesome which makes it a really fun place to work.
- You won't have to do any sales, marketing, customer correspondence, or scheduling as we take care of that.
- We pay you based on the hours we ask you to work; not based on whether clients show up. In other words, you don't have to be at the gym for 12 hours to get 6 hours of work. If your regular shifts are (for example) 7am to 12:45pm Mondays and Tuesdays, and 430pm to 845pm on Wednesdays, you will get a pay cheque every two weeks that covers 31.5 hours.
- We don't expect you to do any work for free, so if we ask you to attend staff meetings or write client programs, you will be paid for that time.
- You will learn a lot about coaching cues, regressing and progressing exercises, and working out around injuries.
Hours and pay:
- We are looking for someone who can work a regular schedule each week that will initially involve two mornings from 7am to 12:45pm (which mornings is to be determined - and your availability can be part of the decision) and one evening from 430pm-845pm.
- There is often opportunity to pick up additional shifts when other trainers are sick or on vacation or if (when?) we add more shifts later in the fall.
- Hourly rate for certified trainers ranges from $25 to $40.
- 3 weeks paid vacation each year plus the week between Christmas and New Years (that week is partly vacation and partly statutory holidays).
