About us
We design and manufacture motorized dampers, make-up air controls, and relay control products for residential and light commercial HVAC. Our products move through distributors including EMCO, Wolseley, and Bartle & Gibson, supported by manufacturer's rep networks across Western and Eastern Canada. We are roughly ten people in Camrose, which means engineering here is not a department. It is a person, and for this term it could be you.
About the role
Our growth depends on new products that our existing distribution channel can sell alongside what we already make. We have a product roadmap. What we do not have is engineering capacity to advance it.
You will take that roadmap and move at least one concept from customer input to a validated, testable prototype. That means talking to contractors, distributors, and reps about what they actually struggle to source. It means translating those conversations into requirements, generating and screening concepts, running the numbers, modelling it in CAD, building it, and testing whether it does what you claimed.
Twelve weeks from now we want a prototype on a bench, a test report that says whether it works, a cost model that says whether we can sell it, and a recommendation you are prepared to defend.
What you'll do
- Interview customers, distributors, and manufacturer's reps to surface unmet needs in HVAC airflow products, and turn what you hear into a written requirements specification
- Generate and screen multiple concepts against cost, manufacturability, and performance criteria rather than committing to the first idea
- Model designs in 3D CAD and produce fabrication drawings suitable for our shop
- Run the supporting engineering: airflow and pressure drop estimates, sheet metal design for our forming and fabrication capability, fastening and sealing approaches, material selection
- Build a working prototype and design the test method to validate it
- Develop a bill of materials and cost model, and assess the design against the applicable CSA and industry standards
- Present findings and a go or no-go recommendation to the owner
What we're looking for
Required:
- Enrolled in a mechanical, mechatronics, manufacturing, or engineering design program at a Canadian university or polytechnic, with at least second year completed
- Working proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360, or Onshape)
- Understanding of engineering fundamentals: fluid mechanics, heat transfer, statics, and materials
- Willing to talk to customers. A meaningful part of this role is asking people questions and listening carefully to the answers
- Comfortable being hands-on in a shop environment
- Eligible to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person)
Preferred:
- Sheet metal design experience, including bend allowances, forming limits, and design for fabrication
- Any exposure to HVAC, building science, or ventilation
- Design projects where you built and tested something physical, whether coursework, a design team, or personal
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability, GD&T;, or structured design methodologies
- Interest in the certification and standards side of product development
You will not know all of this. Show us you can learn quickly and think clearly about tradeoffs. Why this is a good placement
- You own a product concept end to end, from customer discovery through tested prototype. Most students never see that arc.
- You report directly to the owner, a skilled engineer and Six Sigma Black Belt, and you will get direct coaching on structured design methodology
- Our shop is downstairs. The gap between drawing something and holding it is measured in days
- Real constraints: real cost targets, real manufacturing limits, real customers who will tell you honestly if your idea is not useful
- Work that reaches a commercialization decision, not a report that gets filed
Compensation and logistics $20 per hour, 40 hours per week, 12 weeks. On-site in Camrose, Alberta. Start date flexible. Camrose is roughly an hour southeast of Edmonton.
