Job Overview As a Registered Practical Nurse in the Operating Room, you will deliver perioperative nursing care for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery. You will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support safe, efficient surgical care and excellent patient outcomes.
Responsibilities:
Client Driven:
- Establishes and maintains good relations with professional and non-professional staff, patients, families, volunteers and the community.
Service Excellence:
- Adheres to the Policies and Procedures of the Kensington Eye Institute.
- Delivers patient-centred care in accordance with the Patient’s Bill of Rights and organizational standards.
- Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative team members to coordinate patient care.
- Performs both circulating and scrub nurse duties in the operating room based on operational needs.
- Observes strict aseptic techniques throughout each procedure and reports any breaks in technique to the surgeon.
- Ensures all equipment is functional before use and removes and reports any malfunctioning equipment.
- Provides pre-operative and post-operative nursing care as assigned.
- Refers issues and concerns to the clinical team and leaders in a timely manner.
- Completes other duties as assigned based on operational needs.

Financial Responsibilities:
- Supports the budget for KEI and works within its parameters.
- Provides input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required for patients.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Required: Current General Class (Practising) RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Required: Current BLS certification.
- Required: Completion of a perioperative nursing program.
- Preferred: ORNAC-approved perioperative nursing program.
- Required: Minimum of one year of recent, relevant operating room clinical experience.
- Preferred: Acute care experience.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic and excellent attendance record.
- Ability to cross-train to pre- and post-operative areas, and both in circulating and scrub role.
- Willingness to work flexible hours to meet the needs of patients and the facility.
