Position Description

Section Editors are responsible for overseeing the editorial quality and development of content within their assigned section of The Meliorist. Working closely with writers and the Editor-in-Chief, Section Editors guide articles from submission through publication by providing developmental editing, copy editing, fact-checking, and editorial feedback while ensuring each piece meets The Meliorist's editorial standards and style.

Section Editors play a key leadership role in cultivating high-quality written work by mentoring writers, exercising sound editorial judgment, and ensuring published content is accurate, balanced, and engaging. Successful candidates are collaborative, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of journalistic ethics and integrity.

Training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Review & Content Development

- Review assigned submissions for clarity, organization, accuracy, fairness, and adherence to The Meliorist's editorial standards.
- Copy edit articles for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, tone, and readability while preserving the author's voice.
- Provide thoughtful, constructive, and actionable editorial feedback that helps writers strengthen their work and develop their skills.
- Collaborate with writers throughout the revision process to ensure content is publication-ready.
- Ensure articles are properly formatted and prepared for final review by the Editor-in-Chief.
- Maintain consistency with The Meliorist's editorial style, policies, and brand voice.




- Exercise sound editorial judgment when making recommendations regarding content quality and publication readiness.

Fact-Checking & Editorial Integrity

- Verify factual accuracy, quotations, statistics, names, dates, and other critical details prior to publication.
- Ensure articles are supported by credible sources and include appropriate citations where required.
- Work collaboratively with writers to resolve factual inconsistencies or clarify complex information.
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic and academic ethics, fairness, and editorial integrity.

Collaboration & Communication

- Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial team to ensure consistency across the publication.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Maintain regular office hours and contribute to a collaborative newsroom environment.
- Communicate regularly with writers regarding edits, revisions, deadlines, and publication timelines.
- Assist with editorial planning, content scheduling, and other publication initiatives as assigned by the Editor-in-Chief.

Representation

- Represent The Meliorist professionally and uphold the publication's reputation, values, and editorial standards at all times.




- Participate in campus events and outreach activities that promote The Meliorist and increase student engagement.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
