As a Security Guard, you will be responsible for keeping The City of Calgary's people, information, and assets safe and secure. You will provide a uniformed presence to deter disruptive behavior, identify safety hazards, and respond to emergencies, helping ensure the safety of staff, officials, and the public. You will safeguard civic properties through proactive patrols, access control, system monitoring, and incident response, and are often first on scene at critical incidents.

Primary duties include

- Apply risk-assessment principles to detect and address issues before they escalate.
- Conduct interior/exterior patrols, secure facilities (lock/unlock), and support civic events.
- Monitor security, life-safety, and building systems from fixed posts and the Integrated Security Centre.
- Distinguish routine activity from genuine threats, prioritize events, and initiate the appropriate responses.




- Serve as the City's initial stabilizing presence when incidents or emergencies occur on civic properties.
- Activate the appropriate Emergency Response Plans; provide immediate care (First Aid/CPR/AED), secure the scene and manage access and bystanders; deliver concise updates until specialized responders assume command.
- Control access to civic facilities by verifying identities, enforcing security protocols, conducting key/card audits, and providing professional customer service while maintaining a safe and secure environment.
- Create accurate, timely, and factual records of hazards, incidents, system events, and daily activities.

Qualifications

- A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED or CAEC [Canadian Adult Education Certificate]), plus job-related course work and at least 3 years of security-related experience.
- A valid Security Guard License issued by the Alberta Solicitor General's office in accordance with the Security Services and Investigator's Act.
- Current Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level 'C', and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and Internet Explorer, and a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.
- Well-developed communication and problem solving skills,



along with the ability to work effectively with employees and the public at all levels.

Working Conditions: This position requires physical demands, including lifting up to 75 lbs.; bending, crouching, pulling, twisting, turning, and riding; operating elevators with repetitive lateral opening; closing manual elevator doors; frequent walking and climbing stairs; and performing duties in varying weather conditions. The ability to work under stressful conditions and interact with confrontational people is required. Pre-employment Requirements

- An Enhanced Security Clearance (ESC) will be conducted. The ESC requires applicants to have resided in North America for at least 3 years.
- Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis.

Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

- Compensation: Pay Grade 7 $36.60 - 48.97 per hour

- Hours of work: Non-standard 40 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
