The Opportunity

Septic.ca is looking for a dependable, mechanically inclined Septic Service Technician / Pump Truck Operator to join our growing team in Okotoks.

This is not just a driving job.

About half of your time may be spent operating our septic pump truck, with the remainder working on septic repairs, troubleshooting, maintenance, installations and inspections.

We're looking for someone who enjoys variety, likes solving problems, is good with customers and can eventually work with a high degree of independence.

Already have your Class 3 and commercial driving experience but don't know anything about septic systems? That's okay. We can teach you septic.

What we can't teach as easily is honesty, initiative, good judgment and taking pride in your work and equipment.

What You'll Do

Your work may include

- Operate a tandem-axle septic pump truck
- Pump residential and commercial septic tanks
- Troubleshoot and replace septic pumps, floats, alarms and controls
- Perform basic plumbing and septic-system repairs
- Install filters, risers, lids, piping and other components
- Assist with septic-system installations
- Assist with and eventually perform certain septic inspections
- Operate a mini excavator or skid steer, if experienced
- Perform commercial-vehicle pre-trip/post-trip inspections and required documentation
- Keep trucks, tools and equipment clean and well maintained
- Complete job notes, photos and paperwork using a phone or tablet
- Explain septic issues and recommended maintenance to customers
- Collect payment and professionally handle customer questions
- Identify legitimate opportunities to provide additional service
- Help generate work during slower periods by contacting nearby or existing customers who may be due for service

We want someone who can eventually be given a schedule or a job and be trusted to take care of it properly from start to finish.

What We're Looking For

Strongly preferred:

- Alberta Class 3 driver's licence with Q/air brake endorsement
- Previous commercial driving experience
- Excellent driver's abstract
- Mechanical or construction experience
- Basic plumbing and electrical knowledge
- Strong troubleshooting/problem-solving ability
- Good customer-service and communication skills

Experience with any of the following is an asset:
- Vacuum or hydrovac trucks
- Dump trucks or other heavy commercial vehicles
- Mini excavators
- Skid steers
- Trucks and trailers
- Plumbing
- Excavation/construction
- Pumps and electrical controls
- Septic systems

Previous septic experience is NOT required. We will train the right person.



An exceptional candidate with a Class 5 licence and strong mechanical/construction experience may also be considered if they are willing to obtain their Class 3.

Let's get this part out of the way:

Yes, septic tanks sometimes smell.

You'll work outdoors, handle hoses, remove septic lids and occasionally encounter mud, snow and less-than-glamorous working conditions.

You'll need to be comfortable working around septic systems and sewage and physically capable of handling the work, including occasionally lifting approximately 60–70 lbs.

If you're looking for a perfectly clean desk job, this probably isn't it.

If you like working with your hands, troubleshooting problems, operating equipment and having some variety in your day, you may really enjoy it.

Schedule & Seasonality

Our busy season generally runs from approximately March/April through late November or early December, depending on weather.

During the busy season

- Generally Monday–Friday
- Daytime work
- Typically around 40–50 hours during busy periods
- Some weeks may be slower
- Occasional overtime
- Weekend and evening work is uncommon
- Home every night

Hours are dependent on workload and weather and are not guaranteed. Winter is considerably slower. Some service, repair and maintenance work may be available, but winter hours are weather-dependent and can be significantly reduced.

This position can be a particularly good fit for someone who likes working hard through the busy season and having more flexibility during the winter.





Solid employees who complete the season and return the following spring may qualify for an annual return/retention bonus.

Long-Term Opportunity We're looking for more than someone to drive the pump truck for a few months.

For the right person, this can become a long-term position with increasing responsibility.

We'll train you across septic pumping, service, repairs, installations and inspections. As your knowledge grows, so will your independence.

As Septic.ca grows, there is an opportunity for the right person to develop into a senior or lead field position and eventually help oversee other technicians.

Requirements

Successful candidates must

- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Reliably report to our shop in Okotoks, Alberta
- Provide an acceptable driver's abstract
- Be willing to provide a criminal record check
- Be physically capable of performing the work
- Be comfortable working around septic systems and sewage
- Follow company safety and commercial-vehicle requirements
- Maintain a smoke-, vape-, cannabis- and drug-free environment while working and operating company vehicles/equipment
