JOB SUMMARY –
The Staff Engineer provides broad technical and engineering support across Electrical Contacts Limited's product development, manufacturing, research and development, technology implementation, and continuous improvement activities.
The role supports cross-functional engineering initiatives from concept and investigation through development, testing, validation, implementation, and ongoing process improvement.
Staff
Engineers may be assigned to projects or technical areas based on organizational priorities, project requirements, and their individual education, experience, and technical expertise. Key areas of support may include New Product Development, New Product Introduction, research and development projects, manufacturing initiatives, manufacturing process development, materials and product engineering, automation, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives. Working collaboratively with Engineering, Production, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Maintenance, Tool and Die, Purchasing, Sales, and other departments, the Staff Engineer applies engineering principles, technical analysis, structured problem solving, and project support to improve product performance, manufacturing capability, quality, productivity, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES –
Product Development & Engineering Support:
- Support New Product Development (NPD) and New Product Introduction (NPI) from concept through testing, validation, and implementation.
- Provide technical engineering support for product, material, process, tooling, and manufacturing development.
- Assist with manufacturing trials, technical problem solving, and implementation of new or improved products and processes.
Research & Strategic Projects:
- Support research, development, and innovation initiatives including IRAP projects, vacuum liquation, additive manufacturing, and other emerging technologies.
- Conduct or support experimentation, testing, technical analysis, validation, and project documentation.
- Evaluate current materials, technologies, equipment, and manufacturing methods that support ECL's strategic objectives.
Manufacturing & Process Improvement:
- Analyze and improve manufacturing processes to enhance safety, quality, productivity, reliability, throughput, and cost effectiveness.
- Provide engineering support for production troubleshooting, process optimization, equipment improvements, and technology implementation.
- Develop and support appropriate process controls, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Support Continuous Improvement initiatives using structured problem-solving methodologies including A3, Kaizen, Lean, DMAIC, and root cause analysis.
- Identify and implement opportunities to reduce waste, improve process capability, increase productivity, and reduce manufacturing costs.
Project & Cross-Functional Support:
- Support engineering and capital projects from concept through implementation, including coordination with internal teams, suppliers, and external partners.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Production, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Maintenance, Tool and Die, Purchasing, Sales, and other departments.
- Manage assigned engineering priorities and provide technical support based on organizational needs and individual areas of expertise.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES –
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of engineering principles applicable to industrial manufacturing.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, equipment, tooling, process controls, and production systems.
- Knowledge of product and process development methodologies.
- Knowledge of Solidworks and Ansys Softwares
- Understanding of continuous improvement and structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Familiarity with engineering project management, experimentation, testing, validation, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge in one or more specialized areas such as materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, automation, additive manufacturing, tooling, process engineering, or related disciplines considered beneficial.
Skills:
- Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to investigate complex technical problems and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and communicate technical and manufacturing data.
- Strong project coordination and organizational skills.
- Ability to prepare engineering reports, technical documentation, specifications, and recommendations.
- Proficiency with relevant engineering software, CAD, modelling, statistical analysis, or data-analysis tools based on project requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Abilities:
- Apply engineering principles across multiple products, processes, technologies, and projects.
- Move between product development, R&D;, manufacturing support, strategic projects, and continuous improvement priorities as organizational needs evolve.
- Translate technical concepts into practical and manufacturable solutions.
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary and cross-functional project teams.
- Manage multiple technical assignments and changing priorities simultaneously.
- Work independently within assigned areas while recognizing when specialized technical expertise or additional resources are required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another related engineering discipline required.
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant engineering experience within a manufacturing, product development, research and development, or industrial environment preferred.
- Advanced degree, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation,
or eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario considered an asset.
- Experience in electrical contacts, powder metallurgy, metals processing, additive manufacturing, automation, tooling, process engineering, or advanced manufacturing considered an asset.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, A3, Kaizen, DMAIC, or other continuous improvement methodologies considered an asset.
- Experience supporting research, technology-development, government-funded, or capital projects considered an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS –
- Primarily office and laboratory-based role with regular interaction with manufacturing operations.
- Sitting: approximately 60–70% of the workday performing engineering analysis, modelling, documentation, and reporting tasks.
- Walking: approximately 10–20% of the workday supporting production troubleshooting, laboratory testing, or project collaboration.
- Standing: approximately 10-20% of the workday during equipment inspections, testing, or operational reviews.
- Regular exposure to manufacturing environments and laboratory testing equipment.
- Mandatory use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) when accessing production areas.
- Extended computer use and repetitive keyboarding required.
