Position Summary

The Drafting Technologist supports the production of accurate, fabrication-ready shop drawings for miscellaneous metals and structural steel projects. This entry-level role, well suited to a co-op student or recent graduate, uses AutoCAD to translate architectural and structural drawings into detailed fabrication drawings, and Bluebeam to manage markups, redlines, and drawing approvals, under the guidance of senior drafting and engineering staff. The Drafting Technologist works closely with estimating, project management, and fabrication shop personnel, gaining hands-on experience while helping to ensure drawings are accurate, code-compliant, and support efficient production and installation.

Contract Duration: 4 months

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Project Manager, with day-to-day guidance and mentorship provided by a Senior Drafting Technologist.

Key Responsibilities

1. Shop & Fabrication Drawing Production

- Assist in preparing shop and fabrication drawings for miscellaneous metals and structural steel components, including railings, guardrails, stairs, and structural connections, using AutoCAD, under the guidance of senior drafting staff.
- Support the translation of architectural and structural drawings,



specifications, and field measurements into accurate, fabrication-ready drawings.
- Learn to develop connection details, material call-outs, and dimensions in accordance with project specifications and engineering requirements.
- Assist in producing general arrangement drawings, elevations, sections, and details to support fabrication and installation.
- Help maintain drawing templates, standard details, and title blocks to ensure consistency across projects.

2. Drawing Coordination & Markup Management

- Assist in reviewing architectural, structural, and engineering drawings for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
- Begin using Bluebeam to manage drawing markups, redlines, and revisions throughout the design and approval process, with support from senior staff.
- Help track and incorporate comments from engineers, project managers, and clients into revised drawings.
- Support the preparation and maintenance of shop drawing submittal packages and drawing logs for client and engineer approval.
- Assist in coordinating design changes and revisions with project management and fabrication teams to maintain schedule.

3. Field Documentation & As-Built Drawings

- Assist in incorporating field measurements, RFIs, and site conditions into drawing revisions.
- Support the preparation of as-built and conformed-to-construction drawings following installation.
- Coordinate with field personnel, under supervision, to confirm dimensions and help resolve discrepancies between drawings and actual site conditions.

4. Quality Control & Drawing Standards

- Assist with quality checks on drawings to confirm dimensional accuracy, code compliance, and adherence to company drafting standards.




- Learn and apply applicable codes and standards, including AISC, AWS welding symbols, and the Ontario Building Code, with guidance from senior technologists.
- Help maintain organized, up-to-date drawing files and revision histories for audit and reference purposes.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Work with estimating, project management, and fabrication shop personnel to support accurate pricing and efficient production.
- Participate in project kick-off and design review meetings to build understanding of project scope and technical requirements.
- Provide drawing support and clarification to shop and field personnel during fabrication and installation, as directed.
- Contribute ideas to the continuous improvement of drafting processes, templates, and standards.

Experience & Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, a Drafting, CAD Design, Architectural/Structural Technology diploma or certificate program (or equivalent); co-op students and new graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD is required, with a strong willingness to build advanced proficiency on the job.
- Exposure to Bluebeam Revu (or similar markup software) is an asset; training will be provided.
- Some prior drafting experience through school projects, co-op terms, or part time work is an asset
- Basic understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication methods, connections, and welding symbols is an asset.
- Developing ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and shop drawings, with a strong aptitude to learn.
- Familiarity with applicable building codes and industry standards (e.g., AISC, AWS, Ontario Building Code) is an asset.
- Exposure to Tekla Structures or similar 3D modelling software is considered an asset.
