Date: September 1, 2026 Position: Volunteer Fire Fighter The Township of Woolwich is seeking Volunteer Firefighters to join the Fire Services Department and support the protection of life, property, and the environment within our community.

Purpose of position and profile:

Volunteer Firefighters respond to fire, rescue, medical, hazardous materials, and other emergency and non-emergency incidents. Working within the Department's established rank structure and chain of command, Volunteer Firefighters perform assigned duties in accordance with applicable legislation, recognized standards, including NFPA standards, and departmental policies, procedures, and operating guidelines.

Volunteer Firefighters are an important part of the Township's emergency response system and are expected to maintain the training, certifications, attendance, skills, and operational readiness required by the Department.

Responsibilities:

- Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents and perform assigned duties under the direction of the Officer in charge
- Perform fire suppression operations, including search and rescue, fire attack, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and exposure protection
- Provide patient care, including first aid and basic life support, and assist in stabilizing injured persons until advanced medical services arrive
- Respond to and assist with hazardous materials incidents in accordance with departmental training and procedures
- Safely operate fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, radios, and other communications equipment, as assigned and qualified
- Maintain and inspect assigned personal protective equipment, firefighting and rescue equipment, tools,



and other departmental resources
- Participate in station maintenance, equipment inventory, inspections, and activities required to maintain operational readiness
- Participate in required training sessions, drills, exercises, and post-incident debriefs
- Participate in fire prevention, public education, community risk reduction, inspections, demonstrations, and other community outreach initiatives
- Maintain required skills, knowledge, certifications, and continuing education
- Support new recruits and other personnel through mentoring when assigned
- Maintain professional conduct and confidentiality and comply with applicable legislation and departmental policies, procedures, and operating guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Work Requirements:

- Successful completion of the Department's recruitment and selection process
- Ability to successfully complete a twelve (12) month probationary period and meet applicable performance, training, and attendance requirements
- Ability to participate in required training, drills, exercises, and emergency response activities
- Ability to maintain the medical, physical ability, fitness, training, certification, and other operational requirements established by the Department
- Required firefighter training and certifications, including applicable NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II and NFPA 1072 or equivalent qualifications, as required by the Department
- Ability to work effectively within an established rank structure and chain of command
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with Department personnel, supervisors, emergency service partners, and members of the public




- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in emergency and non-emergency situations
- Ability to perform physically demanding duties in hazardous and unpredictable environments
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism, integrity, dignity, and respect
- Valid driver's licence and any other licensing requirements applicable to assigned duties

Compensation: Compensation is provided in accordance with the Township of Woolwich's approved Volunteer Firefighter Compensation Schedule, as amended from time to time.

Working Hours and Conditions:

- Volunteer Firefighters do not have regularly scheduled hours of service, participation may include emergency response, training, meetings, station and equipment maintenance, community and public education events, and other assigned departmental activities
- Volunteer Firefighters are expected to maintain the availability and attendance required by the Department to support emergency response and operational readiness
- Duties may be physically demanding and may involve exposure to smoke, heat, cold, extreme weather, heights, confined spaces, uneven terrain, and other emergency conditions
- Duties may require prolonged standing, walking, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, and working while wearing respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment
