Department Information The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information Based in Yellowknife and reporting to the Public Trustee, as the

Relief Public Trustee Officer , you are responsible for administering estates of deceased persons and trusts for minor children and mentally incapable persons on behalf of clients across the Northwest Territories. You will oversee the financial administration of the Public Trustee Common Fund, including monitoring transactions and completing monthly bank reconciliations for a fund exceeding $5 million and processing more than 6,000 transactions annually.

You manage a diverse and complex caseload involving estate, trust, legal, and financial matters. It requires frequent interaction with clients, legal representatives, financial institutions, and federal, provincial, and territorial government organizations across Canada. You interpret and apply legislation, policies, and procedures related to estate and trust administration, ensuring services are delivered accurately, consistently, and within required timelines. Errors or delays can have significant financial, legal, and reputational impacts on both the Office of the Public Trustee and its clients.

Key Responsibilities

Administer estates of deceased persons.

Administer trusts for minor children.

Administer trusts for mentally incapable persons.





Oversees financial transactions and records for the Public Trustee Common Fund

Supervise the Senior Finance Clerk.

Interacts with clients, government staff and the general public

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of estate, trust, and financial legislation and regulations, including:

Public Trustee Act

Intestate Succession Act

Wills Act

Probate Rules

Indian Act

Income Tax Act

Land Titles Act

Guardianship and Trusteeship Act

Other relevant legislation

Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and procedures and apply them to complex estate and trust matters.

Ability to deal with the public on matters which are highly personal and sensitive.

Strong financial management and trust accounting skills.

Knowledge of income tax requirements related to estates and trusts.

Knowledge of personal and real property administration procedures.

Key Qualifications

Completion of High School and Postsecondary education in bookkeeping and accounting or relevant secretarial and office administration courses and three years direct experience;

OR

A minimum of five (5) years direct experience in a trust accounting setting;

OR

A minimum of five (5) years in an office with legal and financial responsibilities; which includes a minimum of two (2) years experience in the administration of estates.
