Working aspart of the VNFC Custodial Team and reporting directly to the Shelter Managerand Building Services Manager, the Shelter Custodian carries out a variety ofcustodial, maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties related to maintaining ahealthy, safe and clean environment for staff, clients and community.

As a Shelter Custodian, job duties include the following:

- Washand disinfect shelter washrooms and floors, toilets/urinals. Sinks, counters,mirrors, and fixtures etc.
- Laundershelter bedding
- Performexterior grounds duties such as cleaning ground, paved and grassy areas ofdebris
- Snowremoval and sidewalk salting of shelter entrances
- Collectsand removes garbage and recycling from shelter facilities
- Regularand consistent sanitization of surface areas in line with communicable diseaseprotocol
- Checkand replenish stock as needed
- Maintainscleaning equipment, materials, and supplies in a secure and orderly manner toensure the safety of guests, staff, and public
- Ensurethe building is properly cleaned and secured
- Possibledriving coverage for client pickup and/or drop-off dependent on available hoursand employee preference, and other duties as directed by Building ServicesManager

As a member of the VNFC team, job duties include thefollowing:

- Maintain confidentiality
- Participate in staff development, staff meetingsand department meetings as required, including community and cultural events
- Participatein data collection and evaluation tasks as requested
- Familiarity andexperience in Indigenous Communities
- Some knowledge of Indigenous cultures andpractices including from the territory in which the work of VNFC takes place.Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, and anycommunities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobswithin




- Knowledge and practice of providingcommunity-based services to Indigenous peoples using philosophies of culturalhumility and cultural safety.

CommunicationSkills and Abilities

- Abilityto read and write various correspondences such as but not limited to letters,memos etc; comprehend simple instructions and interpret various documents
- Proactivecommunication with management
- Effectivecommunication with staff to ensure the building is safe for daily activities

- Ability tomulti-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professionalattitude in high stress and potentially volatile situations

ProgramAbilities and Knowledge

- A sound understanding of the Friendship Centremovement
- Knowledge of WCB regulations and safe workpractices
- Knowledge of VNFC communicable disease safetyprocedures and protocols
- Ability to practice using philosophies ofcultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.
- Ability to spend a major portion of the workdaystanding, walking and/or sitting as well as bending and stretching, liftingand/or doing labour intensive work

Education

- Graduateof high school or equivalent and/or a Building Service Worker CourseCertificate or equivalent
- Custodialand/or building maintenance experience of 3 years or more

Work Experience

- Preferencefor past experience working in an Indigenous serving organization or communitysetting.

Licenses and/or Certificates

- WHIMSCertificate
- FirstAid certification

Other

- Required to provide current vulnerable sector criminal record check
