Field Representative - Sudbury

We are currently accepting resumes for a Field Representatives to join the Sudbury Regional team. This is a full time, permanent positions, based at our Sudbury Member Centre, primarily serving bargaining units in the construction sector.

Job Summary:
CLAC is a values-based union grounded in principles that emphasize dignity, fairness, cooperation, and constructive labour relations. Representatives are expected to reflect these principles in their work and support members through a service-oriented approach to labour relations. CLAC's trade union representation is conducted by two classifications of union representatives:

Field Representatives employed at the regional level primarily have bargaining unit responsibilities.

Provincial Representatives, in addition to being responsible for advocacy of members in bargaining units, are also responsible for overseeing the administration of many other facets of the trade union. Some of these are performed by representatives and others are delegated to other staff or outsourced.

Key Responsibilities:
Field Representatives shall provide basic advocacy and support for CLAC members. The activities of a Field Representative shall be either directly or indirectly supervised by a Provincial Representative. Their key duties include:

Ensure that workplaces are visited regularly, optimizing member contact and supporting new member on-boarding efforts. Co-ordination and scheduling to affect this is the Field Representative's responsibility.

Lead Union-Management, stewards meetings, and membership meetings. This includes the preparation and distribution of agendas, minutes, and attending to actionable agenda items. A Provincial Representative, may elect to attend, or not, as dictated by the circumstances.

Lead members in solving real and anticipated workplace problems and conflicts and promoting worker participation in the enterprise. This includes the filing and processing of grievances, including grievance investigations.



A Field Representative is authorized to settle grievances but may not elect on their own to refer a grievance to rights arbitration.

Communicate with the Bargaining Unit about the day-to-day practical issues related to the workplace and the collective agreement.

Report routinely to the Provincial Representative assigned to a bargaining unit on significant interactions, complex grievances, and meetings.

Legal research related to grievances and arbitrations, employment statutes, etc.

Support Provincial Representatives with campaigns to organize groups of workers by introducing CLAC or one of its affiliated Locals to prospective members and signing them up as members.

Administrative functions such as paperwork, reports, minutes, and correspondence required in documenting and confirming relations with members, employers, authorities and others.

Field Representatives are expected to fully participate in Regional staff meetings and attend at Provincial staff meetings as requested

Share responsibility for bargaining units, often without daily supervision

Demonstrate teamwork and specialization among the union’s staff; supporting the effective fulfilment of their responsibilities

Other tasks as assigned from time to time.

Limitations on Duties
A Field Representative shall not be a member of Staff Council, and is not authorized to do the following;

Lead negotiations, or conclude or execute a collective agreement, or an amendment to a collective agreement;

Supervise Labour Relations Board applications, responses and interventions to the labour relations board;

Execute a voluntary recognition agreement, or alter the scope of bargaining rights at an existing bargaining unit;

Serve on a standing or ad hoc CLAC committee, or on an external committee to CLAC, except for committees at, or in a bargaining unit;

Serve as an official of a CLAC Local, or administer the affairs of the Local, except for Solidarity Locals;

Appoint,



suspend or remove a steward, bargaining committee, or Local Board official (this does not prohibit the Field Representative from serving as a scrutineer at an election, or from managing the election);

Serve as the media spokesperson on behalf of CLAC;

Represent CLAC or CLAC's policies before an elected official, staff person, or committee of a municipal, provincial or the federal government.

Qualifications & Skills:

Self-starting and self-motivated. Must be able to recognize what needs to be done without being told.

Ability and desire to interface with people in a variety of situations and relationships.

Ability to resolve problems, proactively wherever possible. Field Representatives must seek quick, effective and creative resolutions.

Strength of character reflected through respectful interactions, tact, and sound judgement in difficult situations while remaining firm or adapting as circumstances require.

Strong commitment to CLAC's policies and approach to providing trade union representation for workers.

Reporting and Accountability:
Field Representatives are accountable to and report to the Regional Director or to a senior Provincial Representative designated by the Regional Director. Teamwork and mutual support are key elements to success in the Field Representative position.

Compensation:
The starting annual salary will range from $57,761 to $106,858.
