This position will share their time as a clerk to the Senior Judicial Justice of the Peace and a Judicial Clerk/Stenographer within the Provincial Court and Therapeutic Court. The purpose of this position is to provide administrative assistant and clerk support to the senior Judicial Justice of the Peace and to provide clerical and staff Justice of the Peace services in the Provincial Court and Youth Justice Court of Prince Edward Island. This position must have the ability to complete a summary conviction case through the entire life of the case, including duties at trial, court stenographer duties, fine collection, appeal and record suspension duties. The incumbent is required to act as a staff Justice of the Peace after hours.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

Responsible to schedule show cause hearings and preparing paperwork as a result of show cause hearings;

Preparing transcripts of hearings when required;

Ensuring that all equipment is ready and working prior to show cause hearings ie Courtsmart, FACTS, Virtual Court, telephone conference, etc.,

Responsible to arrange courtroom if required for witnesses, hearing impaired and translation;

Providing clerical support to the senior judicial justice of the peace;

Responsible for answering and screening incoming phone calls;

Once court commences,



the clerk is responsible for the administration of calling the cases;

The clerk will arraign an individual for election or plea. The clerk will endorse the information and provide same to the judge; and,

Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Legal Administration or office studies course;

Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered;

Must have experience interpreting and applying Acts, Provincial Statutes and Regulations (Provincial Court Act, Summary Proceedings Act, Contraventions Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Federal Cannabis Act) in an independent fashion;

Ability to make complex decisions, multi-task and perform a variety of complex tasks in a court setting.;

Computer skills including Microsoft Office, utilizing databases, Microsoft 360 and technical skills for computer projects and reports are essential;

The ability to communicate effectively with the judiciary, members of the Law Society and work well with all government agencies;

Experience communicating with the public in a qualified manner, exercising tact and diplomacy;

Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required;

Will be required to pass transcription testing to become certified to prepare court transcripts within 6 months of hire;

Other Qualifications:

Experience in and training in Records Information Management is an asset;

Proficiency in French is an asset;

Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to deal effectively with others. Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with complaints and challenging clients;

The ability to interpret legislation and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences;

Ability to work both independently and as a team player;

Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset;

The ability to communicate effectively with the judiciary, members of the Law Society and work well with all government agencies.
