Residential Designer / Drafter — Building Storeys: Residential Design, Drafting and Consulting
Saskatoon Area — Local applicants only.
Building Storeys is looking for an experienced Residential Designer / Drafter .
You must live in the Saskatoon area. Although this is primarily a work-from-home position, you will be required to meet clients on site in and around Saskatoon , attend occasional site visits, and take measurements or gather information needed for projects.
We design homes, cabins, additions, garages, suites and other residential spaces throughout Saskatchewan. Our work sits at the intersection of thoughtful design, art, building science, NBCC, creativity, working with the surrounding environment and function .
I'm looking for someone who can take an idea and run with it — someone who enjoys solving problems, understands how buildings actually go together, and gets excited about turning a sketch or a client's vision into a thoughtful, buildable design.
What you'll be doing:
Residential design and drafting using AutoCAD
Developing preliminary designs and construction drawings
Creating 3D models and renderings to help clients visualize their projects
Navigating the National Building Code and Saskatchewan building requirements
Working with energy-code and building-science requirements
Reviewing and applying municipal zoning bylaws
Preparing permit and construction drawings
Researching code and finding practical solutions when things aren't straightforward
Attending client meetings and site visits
Taking site measurements and gathering existing-building information
Working through design challenges and figuring out how to make a project work
Communicating ideas visually and technically
Collaborating with me throughout the design and drafting process
What I'm looking for:
Experience & technical skills
6+ years of experience in residential design, drafting, architecture, engineering or construction
A diploma or technical education in Architectural Technology, Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design or a related field — or equivalent experience
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD
Experience with 3D modelling and rendering
Robust understanding of residential construction and how buildings are put together
Ability to read, interpret and apply the National Building Code
Familiarity with energy codes and building-science principles
Ability to research and interpret municipal zoning bylaws
Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Experience with Revit or other BIM/design platforms would be an asset
The person I'm looking for:
You don't need to know everything — but you do need to know how to find the answer.
You are:
Detail-oriented without losing sight of the bigger picture
Comfortable working independently
Able to manage your time and projects while working remotely
A strong written and verbal communicator
Comfortable collaborating virtually
Curious and willing to keep learning
Positive, kind and solutions-oriented
Someone who takes pride in their work
Someone who can give and receive constructive feedback
Someone who enjoys sharing knowledge and helping others learn
Leadership experience is an asset , and there may be opportunities to take on more responsibility and help guide future team members as the business grows.
This will start as a casual, part-time position with the potential to grow as the business grows.
Starting wage $35/hr but willing to negotiate based on experience
Saskatoon area — required
Primarily work from home
Flexible hours
Casual to start
Hours will vary depending on projects
Occasional client meetings and site visits
Opportunity for more hours and responsibility as we build the right working relationship
This isn't a huge corporate design firm, It's a small, creative business where your ideas matter, you'll have a voice in the design process, and you'll work directly with me and our clients.
