Department: Seniors' Mental Health and Behavioural Supports Ontario
As a fundamental member of North Bay Regional Health Centre’s (NBRHC) North East Behavioural Supports Ontario (NE BSO) and Seniors’ Mental Health (SMH) programs, based in Temiskaming, the Full Time NE BSO-SMH Registered Nurse will work collaboratively alongside key partners to promote wellness and independence, prevent hospitalization and optimize overall quality of life for the individual and their care partner(s).

Reporting to the Manager of North East Behavioural Supports Ontario, this hybrid role will provide outreach services across sectors within the District of Timiskaming. Services focus on comprehensive geriatric mental health and specialized behavioural health assessments, diagnosis, treatment recommendations and knowledge exchange with a key focus on transitional support. The successful incumbent will work within a compassionate person-focused philosophy aligned with best practice principles and frameworks and in accordance with respective standards of clinical practice.

QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required; additional training and/or certification in Geriatric Mental Health, Gerontology, Psychiatric Nursing an asset

Minimum of three (3) years of recent applied clinical experience working with older adults with or at risk of responsive behaviours presenting with geriatric mental health, major neurocognitive disorders, delirium, substance use and/or other neurological diagnoses and their care partners required

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) certificate required

Current Trauma-Informed Care certificate required (training delivered by Health Centre upon hire)

Current Indigenous Cultural Safety Training required (training delivered by Health Centre upon hire)

Certification in the following fundamental geriatric mental health and BSO core competencies are required
Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA)

Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Capabilities, Environment, Social Setting (PIECES)

Demonstrated cultural awareness and safety in working with older adults and care partners from diverse backgrounds required

Demonstrated knowledge of psychotropic medications, symptom management and health teaching among older adults required

Advanced knowledge & demonstrated practical clinical application of geriatric mental health and specialized dementia care, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological best practice principles within their respective scope of practice required

Demonstrated knowledge and required skills to foster critical best practice elements for successful care transitions for older adults and their care partners throughout their journey required

Commitment to health promotion and prevention; quality improvement and change initiatives required

Expert knowledge of Community Support Services, Primary Health Care and Mental Health System Resources & Partners and Consent & Capacity legislation (e.g. Public Guardian and Trustee, Substitute Decision Maker Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Long-Term Care Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)) required

Must have a valid G driver’s license, willingness to travel on a regular basis and access to full-time use of a reliable vehicle is required

Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrated collaboration and clinical leadership skills to facilitate, integrate, uphold and spread behavioural support and geriatric mental health principles and practices among care partners in acute care, long-term care and community sectors required

Demonstrated compassion and person-family focused values with proven interpersonal skills to establish and nurture positive professional relationships with various care partners required





Adept written & verbal communication skills to effectively document and convey essential clinical and systems information in accordance with respective best practices, organizational policies and BSO Standards of Practice, including emerging tools & resources required

Commitment to health promotion & prevention, quality improvement and change initiatives in order to actively contribute to critical program evaluation and other relevant research projects required

Demonstrated integrity and self-awareness of behavioural health promotion and work-life balance required

Skilled time management and organizational abilities to facilitate competing self-directed priorities

Ability to problem-solve and function in a fast-paced environment required

Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required

Progressive computer literacy skills, including adept electronic documentation skills and ability to navigate various electronic platforms (e.g. Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN)) and software (e.g. Teamsetc.) required

Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required

Must demonstrate valuable attendance and work record

Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
