Alberta’s New Democrats are seeking a motivated, creative, and energetic individual for the position of Communications Officer. This position will be based in Edmonton or Calgary.General Description and DutiesThe Communications Officer is an integral part of the Alberta NDP's communications team, contributing across media relations, digital content, copywriting, and messaging to support the party's ongoing work and election readiness.This role is designed for a skilled and versatile communicator with experience working across multiple channels and formats.Working closely with senior communications staff, the Communications Officer will help shape the party's public presence by drafting speeches, candidate biographies, fundraising copy, social media content, and web copy.They will support media relations by building journalist relationships, preparing press materials, and coordinating communications at events. The role requires strong judgment about messaging, the ability to write quickly and accurately under deadline, and a genuine understanding of how to move people to action through language.The ideal candidate brings a mix of writing range, media savvy, and digital fluency. They are comfortable juggling competing priorities in a fast-moving environment and are passionate about progressive Alberta politics.Flexibility is key, as the position will involve working outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends.Key ResponsibilitiesWriting and CopywritingDraft and edit copy for fundraising emails, web content, party communications, and general organizational needsWrite speeches, candidate biographies, talking points, and scripted remarks for candidates and party leadershipProduce clear, compelling content that reflects the party's voice and values across formats and audiencesEmail, SMS, and Supporter EngagementBuild, deploy,



and optimize email and text campaigns using ActionKit.Write and edit campaign copy for fundraising, volunteer recruitment, event signups, and general supporter engagement.Manage list segmentation, targeting, and list hygiene to improve deliverability and engagement.Web and Digital PresenceMaintain and update the party's website using Wagtail CMS, including posting news releases and keeping content current.Build and deploy action-oriented microsites to support campaigns and events.Apply UX/UI principles to improve usability and supporter experience across digital properties.Track and report on web performance using Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager.Media RelationsCoordinate with media team when neededTechnical and Organizational SkillsStrong writing and editing skills across a range of formats and tonesFamiliarity with Adobe Creative Suite and social media management tools is an assetExperience working with vendors or external contractors is an assetStrong organizational skills and ability to manage competing deadlinesSocial Media SupportContribute to digital content strategy and assist with website updatesSupport the broader digital team on campaigns and time-sensitive content needsWork Environment and ExpectationsAbility to work both independently and as part of a team-oriented teamWillingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as neededKnowledge of the Alberta NDP and Alberta’s political landscape is an assetQualificationsRequired QualificationsStrong writing, editing,



and proofreading skills with the ability to produce clear, persuasive content under tight deadlinesDemonstrated project management and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities, manage timelines, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environmentStrong understanding of major social media platforms and how messaging translates across digital and traditional communications channelsAbility to work collaboratively, take initiative, and adapt quickly in a campaign-style team environmentAvailability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, particularly during campaigns, events, and high-volume communications periodsPreferred QualificationsPost-secondary education in communications, journalism, political science, public relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in political work environments1 to 3 years of experience in communications, media relations, journalism, advocacy, campaigns, or a related fieldExperience drafting press releases, speeches, talking points, media lines, or public-facing communications materialsFamiliarity with Alberta politics, political campaigns, labour, advocacy, or nonprofit environments is considered an assetExperience with media monitoring, press outreach, or communications coordination is considered an assetTerms and ConditionsThis is a full-time position. The position is governed by a Collective Agreement between Alberta's New Democrats and COPE 458 and is classified as an S1A Communications Officer. The starting salary is $68,829.55.
