Job Description Housing Support Worker works alongside tenants and participants and is responsible for providing services to improve tenant mental health, housing stability, unit conditions and for facilitating activities that will build a more harmonious community.
Housing Support Worker delivers flexible, cutting-edge and tenant-centered programs and services using mental health recovery principles and applying the harm reduction approach.
The Housing Support Worker reports to the Housing Support Manager and works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team with staff from the Property Services and Finance Departments and external service providers as required.
The position may occasionally supervise practicum students or Supportive Employment Program participants.

Job Responsibilities OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Individual Support Assesstenantsneedsandprovidecoachingandpracticalsupportorrefertoservicestofulfilunmetneeds.
Provideinformalcounselingonmentalhealthand/oraddiction,interpersonalrelationships,lifeskills,food security, and meaningful activities using non-judgmental, recovery, and harm reduction approaches.
Providewarmreferralstoothercommunityservicesand/orhealthservicesandcollaboratewiththese service providers.
Provideadvocacyservicestotenantsfortheirserviceorbenefitsrights.
Supportfamiliesorrefertoservicesregardinginterpersonalrelationships,childcare,education,Childrens Aid Society involvement, and family court issues.
Preventandde-escalatecrises.
Contacttenantsregularlyandpromotetheirwellnessandsafetyincludingwellnesschecks.
Collaboratewithpartnerserviceprovidersandcoordinatecareandsystemnavigationforhousingstability.
Workincoordinationandcollaborationwithotherdepartments(Property
Servicesand
Finance).
Provideafter-hourssupportservicestotenantsonarotationalbasis.
Encourageindependentself-relianceoftenantsthroughreferraltoservicesandresourcesinthecommunity.

Facilitateunitviewingand/orinterviews.

Advise/educatetenantsof their rights and responsibilities.
Collaborateonanddeveloptenantsindividualizedactionplanusingmentalhealthrecoveryprinciples.
Collect income verification documentation and assist tenants to complete their income verification forms.
Remindtenantstoreportchangesintheirhouseholdcompositionorfamilyincome.
Encouragetenantstoparticipateincommitteesandthelargercommunity.
Provideevictionpreventioninformalcounseling,coaching,and/orpracticalsupporttoaddressrentarrears, behaviour, fire safety, illegal behaviours, and unit condition issues including hoarding and pest infestation.
Inspecthousingunitsandsafetyequipmentannuallyormorefrequentlyifthereareunitconditionissues.
Issuewarningletterstoaddresstenancyissuesthatmayleadtoeviction.
Actasagentofthelandlord,makeandimplementrentorbehaviouralagreementswithtenantsandmonitor them.
Community Development Organizeandfacilitategroupactivitiesandcommunityevents,suchasbuildingmeetings,lifeskills programs, meal programs, social recreation programs, and organizational events.
Encouragetenantstoimproveoverallbuildingenvironmentssuchascleanliness,preventionoftrespassers, personal safety concerns, noise reduction, fire safety, and physical appearance.
Informtenantsandencouragetheirparticipationinorganizationalandcommunityactivities.
Identifyandencouragetenantstopursueleadershipopportunities.
Encouragetenantstobecomemembersoftheorganization.

Attendtoafter-hoursemergenciesincludingfires/floods,tenantspassingaway,respondtocallsfrom emergency services (fire, ambulance police), tenants in distress, and tenant health emergencies.
Assist Property Service On-Call staff in the event that they are attending a unit or building (for unit maintenance,oremergencyworkbeingcompletedinvolvingelevatororcommonarea)andthetenantisin distress or not providing access to the unit.
Refertenantrequests,outsideofapprovedemergencies,totheappropriatestafforprocessduringregular business hours.
Conducttenantwellnesscheckswhenrequestedbytenantfamilymembersorsupportagencystaff.
AssesscallsreceivedbySSDoncallforthelockoutandlockchangerequestsreceived.
Providetenant access to the unit (in situation where tenant is locked out and key is inside the unit).

WORKING CONDITIONS Exposuretohouseholdpests,bodilyfluids,individualsexperiencingcrises,individualswhomaybeunderthe influence of substances, cleaning chemicals and some smoking environments.
Workinghoursare35hoursperweek.
Workon-callhours,eveningsandweekendsasrequired.
