Come work as a Surgical Assistant with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!
Richmond Hospital is a fully accredited, 228 acute care bed facility serving a local population of 200,000 with an additional catchment area of almost 120,000. Richmond Hospital is focused on meeting the needs of the people it serves and is seeking Physicians interested toprovide services to the acute emergency surgery services as the On CallSurgical Assist in the Operating Room . The successful applicant will become a member of the (Emergency Slate) On Call Group for Surgical Assistants within the Department of Family Medicine or Department of Surgery (if not a family physician) and will be expected to participate in a 24-hour call rota (0800 to 0800) offering 2-4 days per month (range 1-6 days) . We are seeking candidates dedicated to a commitment of two or more years. Due to the high acuity of emergency services, including E1 stat surgeries like code pink c-sections or ruptured aortic aneurysms, members must maintain geographic proximity to ensure a reliable and sustainable 30-minute response and arrival time to the hospital when necessary.
Qualified individuals are required to meet these call demands and participate in a mandatory, comprehensive onboarding orientation. Regardless of prior specialty background, all newcomers must shadow current call group mentors through representative emergency cases—typically spanning 25 to 30 cases across general surgery, orthopedic trauma, ob-gyn and plastic surgery—prior to joining the roster and being placed into the schedule. In addition to the above surgical disciplines who use this service, the on-call surgical assist may be requested for vascular surgery and urology.
Funding at the hourly sessional FP rate is available for approximately the first 25 hours of active training time.
Once successfully added to the on-call roster, remuneration of the on-call surgical assist will consist of a MOCAP availability stipend (approximately $675 per 24-hour period from VCH), and fee-for-service billings and applicable premiums billed by the physicians personally. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in the surgical care of the patient, show a willingness to learn and improve clinical competency as well as exhibit a highly collaborative approach to work effectively within our five-person in-house emergency operating teams.
Please note this posting is strictly for the (Emergency Slate) On-Call Group. While participating in this on-call surgical assist group offers robust networking opportunities across multiple disciplines, elective surgical assisting at Richmond Hospital is managed independently by individual surgeons and is outside the scope of this credentialing process.
