Overview
Reporting directly to the Manager, Customs Compliance & Operations, the Customs Operations Specialist will support both U.S. and Canadian customs operations. The successful candidate will initially focus primarily on U.S. customs activities for approximately nine months before transitioning to primary ownership of Canadian customs operations while continuing to provide U.S. support during vacations and peak periods.
Overview
Reporting directly to the Manager, Customs Compliance & Operations, the Customs Operations Specialist will support both U.S. and Canadian customs operations. The successful candidate will initially focus primarily on U.S.
customs activities for approximately nine months before transitioning to primary ownership of Canadian customs operations while continuing to provide U.S. support during vacations and peak periods.
Responsibilities
Monitor and troubleshoot day-to-day customs operations with customs brokers, carriers and internal stakeholders.
Report on broker performance and recommend operational improvements.
Prepare and maintain customs databases shared with customs brokers.
Maintain customs records and document retention archives in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Manage U.S. post-entry adjustments, protests, reconciliations, and C.A. CAD Adjustments claims and refunds.
Investigate and resolve duty variances with Finance teams.
Ensure imported purchase orders are declared to CBSA or CBP and audit customs accounting records.
Prepare, submit and follow up on duty recovery claims and customs adjustments.
Manage custom-related payments, broker invoices, carrier invoices and penalties.
Develop, analyze and publish broker KPI reporting.
Identify and implement process improvement opportunities.
Provide backup support across both Canadian and U.S. customs operations.
Coordinate cross-border shipments and customs documentation.
Support drawback programs through preparation of import and export data.
Requirements
College diploma or bachelor’s degree in supply chain, International Trade, Customs or related field is an asset.
Minimum 3 years of relevant customs experience.
CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) certification is an asset.
Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. customs regulations, tariff classification and customs documentation including CAD/CARM accounting records and CBP 7501 entries.
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel (Medium as a must, advanced an asset), Word, PowerPoint
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting.
During the first 9 months, the successful candidate will primarily support U.S. customs operations and compliance activities. Following this onboarding and transition period, the role will assume primary ownership of Canadian customs operations while continuing to provide backup support for U.S. activities during peak periods and team absences.
