The Senior Test Engineer will be responsible for the ownership, maintenance, and development of Automated Test Systems (ATEs) used for testing Battery Management Systems (BMS) and related products for industrial, medical, automotive, and defense applications. This role focuses on maintaining and extending a custom LabVIEW-based ATE platform integrated with Microsoft SQL and the EV Manufacturing System, ensuring reliable production testing, traceability, and reporting. The role requires the ability to quickly understand and take ownership of existing ATE system architecture and extend it for new applications. The position also supports the development of a next-generation Engineering Qualification Tester by expanding the current platform to accommodate higher power systems, additional instrumentation, and enhanced reporting capabilities. The role interfaces with Product Design, Quality, Operations, Production, and external contractors, and includes mentorship responsibilities to develop internal test engineering capability.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
ATE System Development & Ownership
Maintain, debug, and enhance existing automated test systems using LabVIEW
Design and implement test sequences, test programs, and equipment control modules
Integrate and validate test instrumentation including power supplies, loads, DAQ systems, and communication interfaces
Develop and maintain integration between: LabVIEW-based ATE systems, Microsoft SQL database, EV Manufacturing System
Support database structure updates, queries, and data validation
Engineering Qualification Tester Development
Contribute to development of next-generation qualification tester platform based on existing ATE architecture
Develop test plans and test routines based on product specifications
Support product qualification, design verification, and production testing
Perform system-level debugging and root cause analysis, determining failure sources across system layers (test software, instrumentation, fixture, or DUT)
Validate system performance and measurement accuracy
Support and improve integration with the EV Manufacturing System , including: Real-time production monitoring, Yield tracking and performance metrics
Develop and enhance reporting capabilities using test data from SQL, ensuring usability for engineering validation, production tracking, and customer traceability
Generate and maintain: Test system documentation, Wiring diagrams and schematics, BOMs and assembly drawings, Software documentation and change logs
Ensure compliance with revision control and design control processes
Mentor Test Engineers and Test Technicians in: LabVIEW development, Debug and validation methodologies, Test system architecture
Support development of internal expertise
Core Competencies
Strong knowledge of test and measurement instrumentation, including PC-based I/O and data acquisition hardware
Proficiency in LabVIEW for test automation and system development
Familiarity with BMS IC’s and controllers, microprocessors and power semiconductors
Solid understanding of communication protocols: CAN, I²C / SMBus / PMBus, GPIB, SPI / HDQ / UART
Ability to design, maintain, and troubleshoot SQL databases
Strong understanding of ATE system architecture and test frameworks
Experience with hardware/software integration in test environments
Excellent organization, documentation, and attention to detail
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Ability to understand and extend existing complex systems
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum 5+ years experience in Automated Test Equipment (ATE) and Power Electronics or related systems (BMS experience is an asset)
Minimum 3+ years experience with LabVIEW-based system development
Experience modifying and supporting existing/legacy test systems
Experience working with SQL databases for test data and configuration
Experience with system integration across hardware, software, and data layers
Experience in In-Circuit Testing programming and debugging is an asset
Experience with validation or qualification test systems is an asset
Education
Bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer Engineering or related field.
