The Salmon is a very important source of livelihood for the Xaxli’pmex and traditional users. Salmon is sacred in our customs and way of life. We will live up to our responsibility as protectors of the land, water and air to ensure that the Salmon will aways be the primary objective of our Fishing Law, which must be respected and enforced by Xaxli’pmex, for today and future generations. It is recognized and acknowledged that Xaxli’p Fishing Stations from, Ts’iw’t (3mile) to Nqwast (14 mile) along the Fraser River are owned, controlled and governed by Xaxli’p.

Position Summary & Purpose
The Xaxli’p Fish Monitors, under the direction of the Executive Director or designate, is primarily responsible for patrolling the Xaxli’p Traditional Fishing Grounds. The Xaxli’p Fish Monitors will communicate with Xaxli’p Fishermen/women and Traditional Fishermen/women regarding the Xaxli’p Traditional Fishing Laws, and report back issues to the Executive Director or designate.

Responsibilities
Patrol Xaxli’p Traditional Fishing Stations
Report all violations of the Xaxli’p Traditional Fishing Laws
Give professional verbal warnings when Xaxli’p Traditional Fishing Laws are violated

Education, Training and Experience
Security Training (an asset)
Have a valid Driver’s License & reliable vehicle
Ability to work flexible hours
Be physically fit – to climb the trails & carry necessary equipment
Capable of working in a variety of weather conditions




Ability to approach people professionally

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must have transportation/vehicle with a current Driver’s License.
Works well with others, and handles direction and criticism in a positive manner
Politically and culturally sensitive
Must possess a high level of integrity, honesty and trustworthiness and can work independently.
Knowledge of St’at’imc language and culture is an asset.
Flexibility around work hours and willingness to travel.
Criminal record check and driver’s abstract must be provided by successful candidate.

The job duties and responsibilities of this position vary in complexity and often require interpretation as well as solid communications skills to determine the best approach. The scope of work is diverse, and mental stress may be a factor when dealing with operational or people related concerns.
