The Major Crime Unit and Special Victims Unit are specialized teams within the Investigative Services Division (ISD). ISD Detective Constables conduct detailed risk-based and evidence focused investigations. Detective Constables are proven investigators with advanced skills and experience investigating reliable assaults and suspicious deaths, vulnerable person crimes, sexual assaults, kidnapping, and frauds. Detective Constables have expertise interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects and managing risk. They effectively apply investigative strategies to identify and secure evidence. Detective Constables work collaboratively with partner agencies including Crown Counsel, Ministry of Children & Families, Victim Services, VIIMCU and the IIO as required.
Job Description:
Plain clothes (business attire) position working 10 hour shifts and participating in the ISD call out schedule rotation
Works with team of investigators led by an NCO to investigate serious and complex crimes
Develop expertise in a specific ISD crime-related portfolio
Comply with Major Case Management (MCM) principles, ISD Business Rules and disclosure protocols
Build and maintain relationships with victims and witnesses
Effectively manage offenders and conduct ongoing risk assessments
Build and maintain relationships with community partners and work collaboratively with partner agencies
Work proficiently in the MCM environment, including the Affiant, Primary Investigator and File Coordinator Roles
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to learn new skills and analyze key elements of a problem to identify and evaluate possible courses of action and reach logical conclusions
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work unsupervised
Collaborative investigator who excels working with teams and with partner agencies
Ability to identify, gather and recall relevant facts and details and make sound decisions in a timely manner
Demonstrated experience with complex files and long-term investigations
Demonstrated affiant experience across a wide variety of investigations
Proven interview skills with victims, witnesses and accused persons
Demonstrated experience working in an MCM environment
Demonstrated experience providing evidence in court, defending legal applications and managing evidence
Fundamental understanding of Crown/Police MOU and MCU Business Rules
