Job Title: Project EngineerJob Description
The Project Engineer manages capital and manufacturing improvement projects for powder detergent pod production and packaging operations, overseeing equipment design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and startup. This role defines and implements equipment, electrical, and controls requirements, leads cross-functional collaboration with operations, quality, maintenance, suppliers, and contractors, and drives continuous improvement initiatives that enhance reliability, efficiency, and overall plant performance. Responsibilities
- Manage capital projects for powder detergent pod manufacturing, packaging, filler, and shrink sleeve equipment from initial design through commissioning and operational startup.
- Lead equipment design activities, including the development of detailed equipment specifications and layouts for processing and packaging lines.
- Source new or used processing and packaging equipment, evaluate vendors, and coordinate all procurement activities to meet project cost, schedule, and performance targets.
- Define electrical, controls, PLC, drives, and HMI requirements, and collaborate closely with controls engineers, contractors, and system integrators to implement robust automation solutions.
- Execute manufacturing improvement projects involving powder processing, packaging systems, dust collection, pneumatic conveying, and noise reduction initiatives.
- Coordinate project activities with Production, Quality, Maintenance, suppliers, and contractors to ensure operational, safety, and regulatory requirements are fully met.
- Manage contractors and installation activities, including equipment setup, sanitary piping installation (2" to 3"), commissioning, and startup support.
- Plan and oversee FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) for new and modified equipment, ensuring all project milestones are achieved.
- Troubleshoot equipment and process issues, provide technical support to operations, and implement sustainable corrective actions to improve performance and reduce downtime.
- Develop, maintain, and update project schedules, engineering drawings, P&IDs;, and as-built documentation for all assigned projects.
- Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance documentation, and spare parts lists to support reliable long-term operation.
- Apply strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities that increase reliability, efficiency, and overall plant performance.
- Ensure machine safety and compliance with applicable standards, including NFPA 652 and NFPA 654 for dust collection and powder handling systems.
- Optimize plant layout for processing equipment, conveyors, fillers, and packaging lines to improve material flow, ergonomics, and production throughput.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to align project scope, timelines, and resources, and communicate project status and risks in a clear and timely manner.
Essential Skills
- Experience managing capital projects in a manufacturing environment, including equipment design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and startup.
- Strong background in powder handling processes, preferably in food, detergents, or related industries.
- Hands-on experience with processing equipment and packaging lines, including conveyors, fillers, powder handling systems, and shrink sleeve equipment.
- Proficiency in plant layout design, including the ability to develop efficient layouts for processing and packaging operations.
- Working knowledge of electrical controls and the ability to translate process and equipment requirements into documentation for electrical contractors.
- Experience with commissioning and installation of manufacturing equipment, including sanitary piping (2" to 3").
- Mechanical or Industrial Engineering degree or equivalent engineering education.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD 2D for engineering drawings and plant layouts.
- Experience with SolidWorks for mechanical design and equipment modeling.
- Understanding of dust collection systems and machine safety requirements in industrial environments.
- Familiarity with NFPA 652 and NFPA 654 standards related to combustible dust and powder handling.
- Ability to read, create, and maintain P&ID; (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and proven problem-solving skills in a manufacturing setting.

- Experience in powder handling specifically for food or detergent applications.
- background in food and beverage or cosmetics manufacturing environments.
- Experience with electrical controls documentation and coordination with electrical contractors.
- Heating system installation experience, including hot water systems around 1,000,000 BTU.
- Experience executing pneumatic conveying and noise reduction projects in processing plants.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Production, Quality, Maintenance, suppliers, and contractors.
- Strong attention to detail in developing equipment specifications, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Comfort working with sophisticated production technology and automated equipment in high-volume manufacturing.
- Ability to support FAT/SAT activities and provide structured feedback to vendors and integrators.
Work Environment
This role is based fully on-site in a non-union factory environment, working primarily on an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. shift with some flexibility in start time. The facilities feature sophisticated production technology and automated equipment for manufacturing and packaging a wide variety of consumer, industrial, and institutional products, with a particular focus on powdered automatic dishwasher detergent. The environment involves close interaction with production lines, processing equipment, dust collection systems, pneumatic conveying, and packaging machinery, requiring attention to safety standards and operational reliability. The organization invests in purchasing and installing new equipment to meet diverse customer requirements and emphasizes cost-effective manufacturing, high quality standards, and efficient use of chemicals and components. This is a Contract position based out of Etobicoke, ON. Pay and Advantages
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $41.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Workplace Type
