PRODUCTION COORDINATOR – JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY
The Production Coordinator supports the Plant Manager with the day-to-day coordination of shop production. The role keeps information, material, drawings, machine files, QC documentation and production orders organized and moving through the shop. The position is hands-on and requires regular presence on the shop floor.
1. SHOP FLOOR COORDINATION
· Assist the Plant Manager with daily production priorities and communicate priorities to shop employees.
· Monitor jobs through cutting, forming, fitting, welding, QC and shipping.
· Identify jobs falling behind and notify the Plant Manager early.
· Confirm employees have the drawings, material and information required to complete their work.
· Follow up on incomplete work, rush orders and changing production priorities.
· Maintain communication between the office and shop floor.
2. PLATE INVENTORY
· Monitor steel plate inventory by thickness and available quantity.
· Identify material shortages before they affect production.
· Track incoming plate orders and expected delivery dates.
· Help organize plate and usable remnants/offcuts.
· Communicate upcoming material requirements to the Plant Manager and purchasing.
· Help avoid unnecessary purchases when suitable material is already available.
3. NEST PLANNING / LASER COORDINATION
· Review upcoming laser-cutting requirements and production priorities.
· Coordinate required DXF files and machine information with design.
· Organize nests based on required dates and combine work where practical to improve plate utilization.
· Confirm correct material thickness and quantity before releasing nests.
· Coordinate upcoming work with the laser operator and track cut parts into the next operation.
4. QC DOCUMENTATION & SCANNING
· Collect completed QC documentation from the shop.
· Confirm required inspection forms are completed before orders are considered finished.
· Scan and electronically file QC documents by job/order number.
· Maintain organized, traceable QC records and follow up on missing documentation.
5. ORDER TRACKING
· Maintain the active production order list and required completion dates.
· Update order status as work moves through production.
· Identify overdue and at-risk orders and review them regularly with the Plant Manager.
· Follow up with the shop on jobs requiring attention and maintain visibility of upcoming workload.
6. PURCHASING SUPPORT
· Assist with purchasing steel, consumables and production-related materials.
· Request pricing and prepare purchasing information for approval when required.
· Follow up with suppliers regarding outstanding deliveries and expected dates.
· Communicate material delays that could affect production.
· Help maintain appropriate stock levels for regularly used shop supplies.
7. DESIGN / MACHINE FILE COORDINATION
· Work directly with SP Steel's designers, to coordinate production information and machine files.
· Send production priorities and required dates
· Request and track DXF cutting files, STEP files, bend drawings and fabrication/production drawings.
· Review received files for completeness before releasing them to production.
· Identify missing information, communicate revisions and maintain organized electronic job folders.
· Ensure the shop is working from the latest approved information.
DAILY EXPECTATIONS
· Know what needs to ship today and tomorrow.
· Know which jobs are late and which jobs are at risk of becoming late.
· Know what the laser needs to cut next and whether the required material is available.
· Know what drawings or machine files are missing.
· Know what QC documentation remains outstanding.
· Bring problems to the Plant Manager before they affect production or delivery.
KEY PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
· Production Coordination – jobs and priorities are actively followed through the shop.
· Order Visibility – the Plant Manager has accurate and current order status.
· Material Availability – shortages are identified before they stop production.
· Drawing & Machine File Readiness – required DXF, STEP and bend/fabrication drawings are available on time.
· QC Documentation – records are completed, collected, scanned and properly filed.
· Organization & Follow-Up – outstanding items are followed through to completion.
· Communication – potential problems are communicated early and clearly.
ROLE WITHIN SP STEEL
This position supports the Plant Manager
The Plant Manager remains responsible for overall production, manpower, scheduling, quality, overtime, safety and shop performance.
Pay: $55,000.00-$60,000.00 per year
