Job Description

Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian international relief organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Samaritan’s Purse believes in being the first on the ground in order to serve and help those who have suffered through a catastrophic event by providing water, food, shelter and medical care while sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Samaritan’s Purse is seeking WASH programs personnel to serve on our Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART). The Samaritan’s Purse DART stand ready to respond at a moment’s notice whenever and wherever disaster strikes. The DART program is composed of readily available professionals trained to respond within a complex international environment. DART members must have a flexible schedule since deployments occur with little or no warning and have the drive and passion to work in the midst of devastation and tragedy. The locations and living conditions can be challenging and the workdays long and hard. We are searching for flexible people who can overcome daunting logistical challenges to bring help and hope to those who need it most.

WASH Programs Personnel are technical experts who deploy to crisis situations in some of the toughest locations around the world to serve those in desperate need. These responders assist in implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene activities all in the name of Jesus! DART Programs Personnel, in cooperation with the Team Leader, are responsible for planning, designing and implementing all disaster response activities. DART Programs Personnel are leaders in their career fields who are willing and able to step aside from their normal career for a minimum of 3 weeks at a time to answer the call to respond.

Responsibilities

WASH TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

- Implement WASH activities as directed by the WASH Program Manager (PM), ensuring humanitarian standards (Sphere, etc.) protocols and procedures are met.

- Assist the WASH PM with design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of all WASH interventions. (including, but not limited to: water supply, sanitation management (latrines, etc.), hygiene education, and infection control)

- Conduct WASH assessments at the direction of the WASH PM to identify WASH needs and make recommendations for response activities.

- Provide technical support of WASH activities for our emergency field hospitals.





- Ensure proper collection and daily reporting of WASH data to the WASH PM in coordination with the Information Officer.

WASH PROGRAM MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES

- In collaboration with the Program Officer and/or Team Lead, plan and facilitate the WASH activities in accordance with the DART Mandate.

- Monitoring and/or managing the implementation of the WASH activities for the response ensuring humanitarian standards (Sphere, etc.), protocols and procedures are met.

- Reporting to the DART Team Lead and/or Programs Officer on the day-to-day success and development of the ongoing programs including the following:

- Design, implementation and management of all WASH interventions. (including, but not limited to: water supply, sanitation management (latrines, etc.), hygiene education, and infection control)

- Conducting routine WASH assessments in collaboration with GIS Specialist, Information Officer, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and medical teams to identify WASH needs at project level, and making recommendations for response activities. Ensuring the WASH contribution to the development and planning of emergency response strategies and resources, in collaboration with all programs and the DART Mandate.

- Oversee the supply and procurement of all WASH Program equipment, supplies and tools ensuring the appropriate technical specifications.

- In collaboration with the DART Team Leader, Programs Officer, Logistics and HR, participate and/or facilitate HR associated processes of recruitment, training, briefing/debriefing, and evaluation of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure adequate staffing needs to fulfill objectives within the DART mandate.

- Providing technical support to the medical team in identifying possible "risk factors" (e.g. behavioral practices, environmental sources of infection, and transmission routes) and offers solutions for infection control. Actively contributing to the integration of WASH activities in the medical intervention offering project proposals and work plans.

- Ensuring proper collection and daily reporting of WASH data to the Information Officer coordinating with the Information Officer, Monitoring & Evaluation Officer, and GIS Specialist.

Qualifications





- Qualified applicants should be committed to Christian values and precepts and be in agreement with the Samaritan’s Purse Statement of Faith.

- Fluency in both written and spoken English is required; proficiency in other languages is an asset.

- 3-5 years proven work experience in applicable career fields (i.e. engineering) within the last five years is required.

- Bachelor’s degree from 4 year college or university or technical training in specific field preferred.

- 1-2 years’ professional experience in international context or disaster response management in developing countries is highly desirable.

- Available on short notice for immediate 4 week deployment at least once every 2 years.

- Able to serve within a very fast-paced environment, 7 days/week for extended hours while on deployment.

- Willingness to work in unstable, insecure areas.

- Versatile and able to manage stress.

- Able to work as a member of a team, particularly cross-culturally.

- Teaching experience desirable, but not required.

- Willingness to engage in daily prayer ministry with the DART team and with the patients we serve.

- Maintains an evangelical heart and passion for others to know the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

- Valid passport with no travel restrictions.

- Note: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

WASH Program Manager Additional

- Previously deployed with Samaritan's Purse as a WASH Technician or prior experience implementing WASH programs in a humanitarian or international development setting.

These are not volunteer opportunities; a daily stipend, travel, lodging, meals and emergency travel insurance are covered by the organization.
