About the Role
Durham Bone and Joint Specialists is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Accountant to join our team.
Reporting to the leadership team, the Accountant will support the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization, including transaction processing, account reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, payroll support, month-end activities, and financial reporting.
A key focus of this role is maintaining accurate, reconciled, and well-organized books throughout the year to support reliable financial reporting and an efficient year-end handover to the organization's external accountant.
The role may also provide accounting support across multiple related business entities.
This opportunity may appeal to an experienced accounting professional interested in joining a growing organization in a long-term capacity, as well as a strong recent accounting graduate looking to build broad, hands-on accounting experience.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Maintain accurate accounting records in QuickBooks Online.
- Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, and payments.
- Review and appropriately classify transactions within the general ledger.
- Maintain organized supporting documentation and accounting records.
- Support accounting across multiple related business entities.
Reconciliations & Month-End
- Complete monthly bank,
credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Review general ledger accounts and investigate discrepancies or unusual balances.
- Prepare routine journal entries, accruals, and reclassifications.
- Maintain supporting schedules for key balance sheet accounts.
- Assist with GST/HST reconciliations and month-end close.
Payroll & Financial Reporting
- Support payroll processing, reconciliations, and employee expense processing.
- Prepare monthly financial reports and supporting schedules.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting as required.
Year-End Preparation
- Maintain clean and reconciled books throughout the year.
- Prepare year-end reconciliations, schedules, and working papers.
- Ensure supporting financial documentation is complete and organized.
- Coordinate requested financial information with the external accountant.
- Record approved year-end adjusting entries.
Accounting Controls & Process Improvement
- Support improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
- Maintain accurate and organized electronic financial records.
- Assist with other accounting and financial projects as required.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, or Business Administration/Commerce with an accounting specialization or significant accounting coursework.
- Previous accounting experience is preferred; however,
recent accounting graduates with strong knowledge of the accounting cycle will also be considered.
- Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong understanding of the accounting cycle, including journal entries, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Knowledge and experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, and balance sheet accounts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, investigate discrepancies, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
