The Opportunity

The Personal Support Worker plays an integral role in creating a home-like environment where feel valued, respected and supported. The PSW recognizes and honours the uniqueness of each resident, taking a people before tasks approach to care. Working within an emotion-focused, relationship based model, the PSW provides compassionate, person-centered care that supports each resident’s physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Responsibilities and Duties

- Works with residents to complete activities of daily living such as getting in and out of bed, personal hygiene and grooming, getting dressed, eating, taking a bath, etc.
- Ensures residents are well cared for and comfortably dressed in clothing and footwear appropriate for how they choose to spend their day.
- Supports a whole-team approach to resident engagement; promotes and participates with residents in programs, activities, household tasks and conversation.
- Documents all aspects of care in Point of Care (POC) and Vital Hub.
- Ensures all changes in resident’s physical, cognitive or emotional well-being are reported to the nurse and documented in Point Click Care, such as injuries, skin breakdown, change in condition etc.
- Encourages meaningful, relaxed, social mealtimes for residents and team members. Assists residents with meals and supplements as directed and documents food intake in POC.
- Participates in and maintains an accurate knowledge base of each individual’s unique life story and personalized plan of care.
- Applies the principals of good body mechanics, particularly relating to helping residents change or adjust their position and uses mechanical lifting devices appropriately.
- Cares for residents’ personal effects, changes bed linens as needed,



and supports residents daily with bed making according to their preferences.
- Ensures adequate supply of materials are re-stocked for next shift and uses these supplies efficiently
- Participates in daily rounds to connect with the team and begin each work day informed of changes in the residents’ condition/needs.
- Supports a palliative approach to care by delivering compassionate end of life care that considers the needs of the resident and their families.
- Participates in huddles, in-services/meetings and quality work groups.
- Provides input for family care conferences and attends if needed.
- Contributes to a positive and respectful workplace by fostering open communication, supporting colleagues, demonstrating understanding and empathy and working collaboratively as part of the team.
- Provides physical comfort and supportive care to residents, always treating each with dignity and respect.
- Answers call bells promptly.
- Is attentive to the requests and concerns of family, and will redirect where appropriate.

Qualifications

- Must have a PSW Certificate from a recognized College.
- Minimum of 2 years working in a Long Term Care setting is preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion, validate emotions, support dignity, and promote understanding of those living in long-term care.
- Ability to communicate well with seniors with excellent interpersonal skills, using positive language to support emotional well-being.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with others.
- Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.
- An up to date immunization record including COVID-19 vaccination series, annual influenza and TB screening.

Hours

Flexible part time day, evening and night lines are available. All lines include alternate weekends and stat holidays, as required.

Pay: $25.18 per hour

Expected hours: 8.0 – 20.0 per week
