We run a cow-calf beef cattle operation near St. Paul, Alberta, in the Lakeland region of East Central Alberta. This is a hands-on operation where the work matters, the cattle come first, and good judgment is valued over constant supervision. We’re looking for someone who cares about cattle, takes pride in quality work, and has the judgment and initiative to identify and tackle important tasks without constant direction.

This is not an entry-level role. We are looking for a capable, self-directed individual who has spent real time working cattle and equipment on a functioning farm. About the Role

This is a full-time, year-round position. The work is varied across the seasons and demands a broad skillset. Core duties include but are not limited to:

Daily Cattle Handling & Herd Management

● Daily monitoring of cattle health, body condition, and behaviour across the herd

● Identifying and responding to signs of illness, injury, or distress

● Moving and sorting cattle through handling facilities (chutes, tubs, sorting alleys)

● Administering basic treatments and coordinating with a veterinarian as needed

● Maintaining accurate herd records

Tractor Operation & Feeding

● Daily feeding operations using silage wagons and bale processors

● Loader work including bale handling, silage face management, and ration preparation

● Safe and efficient tractor operation across varied terrain and seasonal conditions

Silage Production

● Full participation in silage production from field prep and seeding through to cutting and pit management

● Silage packing (tractor packing) and covering

● Monitoring fermentation and managing spoilage

Fencing





● New fence construction: barbed wire, electric, and page wire

● Post installation using manual methods, hydraulic post pounders, and augers

● Ongoing fence maintenance and repair across the operation's land base

Equipment Maintenance & Basic Repairs

● Routine maintenance on tractors, trucks, wagons, augers, fencing tools, and associated equipment

● Diagnosing and addressing breakdowns in the field

● Keeping equipment in safe, functional working order

Calving Season

● Checking, tagging, monitoring new pairs and record-keeping

● Extended calving barn duties including feeding/watering and bedding

● Assisting with difficult births (pulling calves)

● Tube & bottle feeding and monitoring calf health

General

● Independent work with minimal supervision – sound on-farm decision making is expected

● General farm upkeep, yard/shop maintenance, and seasonal tasks as required

What We're Looking For

● Minimum 3–5 years hands-on experience on a cattle or mixed farming operation

● Proven tractor operation experience including silage wagon and loader work

● Demonstrated experience building and repairing fences (barbed wire, electric, page wire)

● Mechanical aptitude for routine equipment maintenance and basic field repairs

● Ability to work independently and make sound, calm decisions with livestock

● Valid driver's licence – Class 5 minimum

● Physical fitness for demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions, including cold Alberta winters

● Reliable, punctual, and committed to a high standard of animal care

Preferred (Not Required)

● Class 1 or Class 3 driver's licence

● Welding experience (MIG, stick, or cutting torch)

● First aid certification

● Experience with GPS or precision agriculture technology

Pay: $16.44-$29.87 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 – 100.0 per week
