ABOUT THE ROLE

The Caribou Child & Youth Centre is seeking a compassionate, organized, and community-minded Family Support Advocate to join our team. This position provides advocacy, support, information, and referrals to child victims and their non-offending family members accessing services through the Centre.

Working closely with the Centre Coordinator and our multidisciplinary partners - PACE, the Police, Children and Family Services, the Crown Prosecutor's Office, and Victim Services - the Family Support Advocate supports families through disclosure, investigation, court processes, and recovery, while helping create a safe, welcoming, and child-focused environment.

PREFERENCE FOR THIS POSITION

Many of the children and families who come to the Caribou Centre are First Nations, Metis, or Inuit, and this role includes cultural support duties. For that reason:

Preference will be given to First Nations, Metis, or Inuit applicants, or to candidates with demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and traditions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide advocacy and support services to child victims and non-offending family members

- Conduct care calls, provide referrals, and assist families in accessing community resources

- Support children and youth through the court process, including age-appropriate and culturally appropriate court preparation

- Attend docket court and other proceedings, providing updates and support to families where consent to share information has been given

- Promote cultural awareness, safety, and humility within the Centre, and work with PACE to develop and facilitate Cultural Awareness training for the Community Support Program





- Maintain accurate records and uphold strict confidentiality standards

- Assist with case management, statistics collection, and monthly multidisciplinary case reviews

- Support day-to-day operations and ensure the Centre is welcoming and prepared for client arrival

- Represent the Centre at community events, presentations, and public awareness activities

- Assist with social media communications and community engagement initiatives

- Support fundraising and community outreach activities as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

- A diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Criminology, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

- Knowledge of child abuse, trauma, family violence, and their impacts on children and families

- Solid organizational, documentation, and case management skills

- Understanding of the criminal justice system and court processes is considered an asset

INDIGENOUS CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE (PREFERRED)

- Knowledge and understanding of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit histories, cultures, and traditions

- Knowledge of the surrounding Nations, Metis communities, and urban and away-from-home Indigenous peoples

- Experience working with Indigenous children, youth, families, and communities

- Understanding of cultural safety, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice

- Knowledge of Indigenous support services and community resources

- Experience incorporating culturally responsive approaches into family support and advocacy work

Pay: $50,000.00-$64,000.00 per year
