Build your career with SME.

At SME, we believe great accounting is about more than getting the numbers right. It is about understanding what those numbers mean, helping clients make better decisions, and building relationships that make a difference.

We are a growing accounting and advisory firm serving privately owned businesses, entrepreneurs and organizations across a range of industries. Our size allows us to offer something different: the chance to work closely with clients, managers and partners, take real ownership of your work, and see the impact of what you do.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to join our team.

This is not a role where you will simply process transactions and move on to the next file. You will manage a portfolio of clients, take ownership of their day-to-day accounting and financial reporting needs, and work with financial data to help clients better understand their businesses.

For someone who has built a strong foundation in bookkeeping and accounting, this is also an opportunity to grow beyond traditional bookkeeping. You will gain greater exposure to financial analysis, management reporting, budgeting, forecasting, data analytics and advisory work while working alongside experienced accounting professionals.

What you'll do

As a Senior Bookkeeper, you'll be a key point of contact for your clients and an important part of our broader accounting team.

- Manage full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients across a variety of industries.
- Take ownership of monthly and quarterly close processes and ensure client records are complete, accurate and up to date.
- Prepare and reconcile bank, credit card and other balance sheet accounts.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities and intercompany accounts.
- Prepare GST/HST remittances and payroll source deduction filings.
- Support payroll administration, including preparation of ROEs, T4s and related filings.
- Prepare financial statements, management reports and recurring reporting packages for client review.
- Work with large volumes of financial and transactional data, including organizing, validating, reconciling and analyzing information from multiple sources and accounting systems.
- Use advanced Excel skills to manipulate and analyze large datasets, perform complex reconciliations, identify trends and anomalies, and develop meaningful financial reporting.
- Analyze financial and operational data to identify trends, variances, unusual activity and areas requiring further investigation.
- Transform complex financial data into clear,

practical insights that help clients better understand their financial performance and make informed decisions.
- Build and maintain KPI dashboards and other reporting tools that provide clients with greater visibility into their financial performance.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow analysis.
- Investigate discrepancies and accounting issues and work with Managers and other members of the engagement team to develop appropriate resolutions.
- Work directly with clients to obtain information, answer questions, resolve outstanding items and keep files moving forward.
- Support year-end working paper preparation and collaborate with SME's assurance and tax teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve client accounting processes, reporting and overall efficiency.
- Help us continue to improve how we use technology, automation and data to deliver better information to our clients.

What you bring

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical bookkeeping skills with strong data and analytical capabilities. You should be equally comfortable working through the details of a general ledger as you are working with a large dataset to understand what the numbers are telling you.

- 3-4+ years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably within a public accounting or professional services environment.
- Strong full-cycle bookkeeping experience and a solid understanding of accounting principles.
- Demonstrated experience working with large financial datasets and the ability to efficiently organize, manipulate, reconcile and analyze significant volumes of data.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, data validation, filtering and sorting, conditional formulas, and working with large datasets.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends, inconsistencies, anomalies and relationships within financial data.
- Experience using Power Query, Power Pivot, Power BI or similar data analytics and visualization tools is a strong asset.
- The ability to take raw financial data and turn it into useful reports, analysis and insights for clients and internal stakeholders.
- Experience managing multiple client files and competing deadlines.
- A strong understanding of payroll fundamentals and Ontario payroll requirements.
- Hands-on payroll administration experience,

including ROEs and T4 preparation.
- Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
- Experience with Caseware Working Papers and Tax Software is an asset.
- Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate financial information clearly to clients and non-financial stakeholders.
- A collaborative approach and a willingness to support and develop other members of the team.

Most importantly, you are someone who does not just ask, "Do the numbers balance?" You want to understand why the numbers look the way they do, what the data is telling you, and how that information can help a client make better decisions.
