The opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Director, Digital Transformation, the Applied AI Engineer will design, build, deploy, and optimize AI-powered solutions that create measurable business value.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on applying AI to real business challenges, not building foundation models. Working closely with business, data, and technology teams, you will take AI solutions from concept to production, delivering agents, assistants, automations, and applications that help teams work smarter.

Joining WELL's growing Business Transformation team, you will help shape the future of AI across one of Canada's leading healthcare technology organizations.

This is a fully remote role based anywhere in Canada, with a preference for candidates located in Toronto or Vancouver.

Who you are

You are an experienced software engineer and builder with robust applied AI capabilities, energized by turning ideas into solutions people actually use. You take ownership of the full journey — from design and development through deployment and continuous improvement.

You combine technical skill with curiosity and business acumen, asking thoughtful questions and working closely with stakeholders before determining the best path forward. You thrive where ambiguity exists, building practical solutions that improve efficiency, support decision-making, and automate workflows.

You understand that successful AI solutions require more than great prompts — they require thoughtful integration, secure data access, testing, monitoring, governance, and ongoing iteration to be reliable, scalable, and trusted.

What's in it for you

Build what's next. Join a growing team building enterprise AI capabilities from the ground up, contributing to high-impact initiatives and influencing how WELL leverages AI in the years ahead.

Make an impact. See your work move into production, gain adoption, and deliver measurable outcomes — not just experimentation.

Grow with the team. Work alongside experienced AI, data, and technology leaders with increasing opportunities as WELL expands its AI capabilities.

You will:

- Build AI solutions. You will design, build, deploy, and continuously improve AI-powered solutions that help teams work smarter and make better decisions. Working closely with business stakeholders, data teams, and technology partners, you will translate business needs into practical applications, intelligent agents, assistants, workflow automations, and other AI-enabled solutions.
- Connect data and systems. You will connect AI capabilities with enterprise data, systems, APIs, and business applications, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with enterprise standards. You will partner with Data Engineering and Technology teams to establish reliable data access patterns and support long-term maintainability.
- Optimize performance. As solutions move into production, you will be responsible for evaluating performance, monitoring effectiveness, implementing appropriate controls and guardrails, and continuously improving outcomes based on user feedback and business results.
- Evaluate and Improve AI Performance. You will design testing and evaluation approaches to measure solution quality, accuracy, reliability, and business effectiveness. You will monitor production AI solutions and continuously improve performance based on user feedback and operational metrics. An important part of this role is the ability to implement guardrails, access controls, and monitoring to support responsible AI use.
- Drive adoption. Along the way, you will collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to identify opportunities, demonstrate solutions, educate users, and help drive the successful adoption of AI technologies.

Here's what you bring:

- Technical foundation. You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, solution engineering, data engineering, or related technical roles. You have experience designing, building, and deploying production AI solutions and understand the realities of supporting those solutions after launch. You have strong programming skills in Python and experience with APIs, databases, cloud environments, and enterprise integrations to connect systems, data, and AI capabilities to solve business challenges.
- AI expertise. You have hands-on experience building and deploying solutions using modern large language model platforms such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, or similar technologies. You have applied concepts such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool calling, workflow orchestration, and agent-based architectures in working applications.
- Delivery mindset. You bring a strong delivery mindset. You enjoy taking ownership, working through ambiguity, and moving solutions from concept to production. You understand how to balance innovation with practicality and are motivated by building solutions that create meaningful business outcomes.

You are equally comfortable making sound technical decisions and getting hands on to implement them.
- Stakeholder partnership. You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, collaborating to understand business challenges, align priorities, and translate needs into practical solutions.
- Curiosity and continuous learning. You are naturally curious, eager to learn, and energized by solving complex problems. You think beyond immediate requirements and are always looking for better ways to create value through technology.

Preferred qualifications

While not required, experience building AI assistants, agents, workflow automations, enterprise search, or knowledge management solutions would be an asset. Additional experience with LLMs such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Codex, Claude Code, and AI orchestration and automation tooling such as LangGraph, n8n, or Logic Apps, as well as AI monitoring, evaluation, and observability practices, would help you ramp up quickly.

Experience working in healthcare, regulated industries, or privacy-sensitive environments is also considered an asset.
