JOB SUMMARY
Segra is a young, dynamic company in the cannabis science space, focusing on large-scale cultivation of cannabis tissue culture for corporate clients around the world.
We are searching for a hands-on Assistant, Propagation to grow with us. In this role you are the right hand to the Propagation Coordinator: you work alongside the propagation team on the floor, direct day-to-day tasks, and make sure the daily production plan is executed on time and to standard.
Reporting to the Propagation Coordinator, you will step up to run the department in the Coordinator’s absence. This is a working leadership role — the majority of your time is spent on the floor with the crop and the team, not at a desk.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assign, sequence and follow up on daily propagation tasks (transplanting, cloning, watering, inspections, sanitation) so that the Coordinator’s production plan is met.
· Work hands-on alongside the team; lead by example on quality, pace and safe work practices.
· Train, coach and onboard new and existing propagation team members on Segra’s SOPs and techniques, and verify that the training has taken hold.
· Act as the first point of contact for the propagation team — answer questions, unblock issues, and escalate anything affecting the crop, schedule or safety to the Propagation Coordinator promptly.
· Cover the Propagation Coordinator during vacation, illness and off-shift periods, including daily crop walks, task assignment and shift hand-off.
· Scout the crop daily for molds, mildews, insect pests and nutrient deficiencies; record findings and support timely pest and disease control measures as directed.
· Support irrigation and fertigation events as directed by the Coordinator; monitor plant health and growing conditions and report deviations.
· Verify that production, traceability and cultivation records are completed accurately and on time, including entries in our seed-to-sale software, GrowerIQ.
· Recognize unsafe conditions and practices and correct them; support safety inspections and investigations across the propagation area.
· Maintain sanitation standards for rooms, tools and equipment, and operate equipment as required (e.g., foamer, pressure washer).
· Track consumable and material levels and flag replenishment needs to the Coordinator.
· Complete plant inventory counts and reconciliations as required.
· Identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency and quality, and bring them forward to the Coordinator.
· Provide fair, timely and balanced feedback to team members, and support the Coordinator with performance and attendance observations.
· Adhere to Segra’s SOPs, ISO requirements, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Health Canada’s Cannabis Act, and any additional regulatory or customer requirements for regions supplied by the Segra facility (for example – CUMCS, GACP, EU GMP where applicable).
· Promote and maintain GACP and IMC GAP requirements within the propagation area.
· Position details and activities may change from time to time to meet operational needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Strong organizational skills and the ability to keep a team on task through a full shift.
· Clear, respectful communication and the ability to deal with all types of personalities.
· Sound judgement — knows what can be handled on the floor and what must be escalated.
· Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, with strong attention to detail.
· Basic to intermediate computer skills in MS Office and comfort with record-keeping software.
· Ability to read, understand and follow the Cannabis Regulations and Segra’s procedures.
· Working knowledge of plant health indicators and growing conditions is an asset.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change.
· Excellent attendance record and reliability.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
· 1–3 years of experience in plant propagation, greenhouse, nursery, farming or a comparable production environment.
· Previous experience leading, training or acting as a senior hand for a small team is strongly preferred; formal supervisory experience is an asset.
· Experience in a regulated or GMP/GACP production environment is an asset.
· Experience with seed-to-sale or production record-keeping software (GrowerIQ or similar) is an asset.
· Be a self-starter with a positive attitude and a desire to work in a team environment to achieve overall goals.
· CTLS Security Clearance (preferred).
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must be 18+ with the ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP security clearance throughout your employment.
JOB SPECIFIC DEMANDS:
Applicants must be fit and able to comfortably lift up to 50 lbs. Applicants must be flexible to work variable shifts and have reliable transportation. Hours are full time but may include weekends or evenings, depending on production needs. Some tasks require standing or sitting for extended periods, working in tight spaces, and working outside on occasion.
OUR ENVIRONMENT:
Plants like heat and humidity. To be successful in this position you need to be comfortable working in an enclosed environment with high heat and humidity (up to 30 degrees Celsius), in the presence of pollen and plant debris, and wearing protective clothing, hair covering and other Personal Protective Equipment.
