Job Overview The Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving meals for residents of Genevra House in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide, dietary needs, and shelter policies. This role ensures the kitchen operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with public health standards. The Cook contributes to a supportive environment by maintaining respectful interactions with residents and modelling trauma‑informed practice.

Responsibilities

- Prepare daily meals for residents, ensuring nutritional balance and accommodation of dietary restrictions (allergies, cultural needs, health conditions).
- Plan weekly menus that align with shelter guidelines and available food inventory.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and protected kitchen environment in accordance with public health regulations.
- Monitor food supplies, rotate stock, and assist with inventory management.
- Prepare weekly grocery order and sort, store, and incorporate items appropriately.
- Follow all YWCA policies related to safety, confidentiality, and trauma‑informed practice.




- Communicate respectfully with residents and staff, maintaining professional boundaries at all times.
- Collaborate with the shelter team to ensure meals support the overall well‑being of residents.

Experience

- Experience cooking in a commercial, institutional, or community setting (shelter, long‑term care, school, restaurant, etc.).
- Knowledge of nutrition, menu planning, and safe food handling practices.
- Valid Safe Food Handler Certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to trauma‑informed, non‑judgmental practice.
- Ability to lift and carry supplies and stand for extended periods.
- A clear Vulnerable Sector Check (required upon hire).

Pay: $18.40-$20.85 per hour Expected hours: 35.0 per week
