Summary:
Cooks will prepare, portion, cook, and serve a wide variety of foods and accommodate special dietary requirements when required. Cooks will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness of the kitchen and storage areas, communicating with prep cooks, baker, and dietary service worker, and training/on boarding of new staff.

Job Duties:
- Supervise and co-ordinate the activities of staff preparing, portioning and serving food.
- Work with the Food Services Manager to ensure the department operates in a food secure manner. Identifying and correcting any imminent food safety concerns immediately.
- Receive and check food orders for quality and identify damaged or expired food products.
- Stock food and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and in accordance with the food safety policy.
- Estimate food requirements and maintain inventory of food and supplies (Food Services Manager to verify orders).
- Prepare and cook complete meals or individual dishes and foods.
- Prepare and cook special meal items for residents as instructed by the dietitian (ie, gluten free, lactose free, modified textures, or products without specific allergens). Supervise special meal preparation if completed by the prep cook.
- Provide friendly and quality meal service to residents, clients, guests, and staff.
- Serve complete meals or individual dishes and foods according to portion guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper portion size to dietary service workers.
- Follow the menu plan for food production.
- Complete food safety records and other records, as required.
- Clean utensils, equipment, kitchen, storage, and work area.
- Use equipment properly and responsibly to promote sustainability of equipment. Report any maintenance or safety concerns.
- Set up and oversee dining area.
- Provide input for menu plan.
- Follow all sanitation and infection control procedures.
- Evaluate prepared foods for flavour, appearance, quality, and temperature.
- Participate in relevant continuing education sessions offered by the workplace.
- Effectively manage time to meet production requirements.
- Train staff in job duties, sanitation, and food safety procedures.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 equivalency.
- Considerable experience an asset.
- Completion of related post-secondary training an asset.
- Red Seal Chef Certification an asset.
- Up-to-date Food Safety, WHMIS, and CPR certificates or able to obtain.
- Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people.
- Ability to work as a team member and ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
- Proof up-to-date vaccinations and a satisfactory criminal record check.
- Ability to make plans to attend shifts during inclement weather.
Working Conditions:
- Rotating shifts between 4 and 12 hours.
- Rotating shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Moderate physical exertion involving bending and reaching, as well as lifting of up to 100lbs may be required.
- Frequent handling of cleaning products.
- Use of hazardous kitchen equipment including dishwasher, knives, bread slicer, meat slicer, oven and stove.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Tolerance for very warm environments.
Job Types: Permanent, Full-time Pay: $25.00-$26.50 per hour
Expected hours: 30.0 – 37.5 per week
