We are seeking an exceptional Director of Data Engineering to join McKesson Technology US Pharmaceutical Distribution (USPD) Decision Intelligence organization. This role involves leading the design, development, and optimization of USPD data products, setting the technical vision, managing high-performing teams, and aligning data strategies with business objectives.

The position requires overseeing large-scale data platforms built on modern data stacks, collaborating with stakeholders to ensure data capabilities support business needs, and maintaining data governance, security, and best practices. The successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise combined with proven leadership skills to deliver impactful data solutions that enable critical business decisions across the USPD portfolio.

About The Role The Director of Data Engineering will be responsible for leading the strategic and operational aspects of McKesson’s data engineering initiatives within the US Pharmaceutical Distribution division. This leadership role requires a visionary approach to data architecture, a focus on innovation, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business insights.

The role involves managing a team of data engineering professionals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence, and ensuring the delivery of scalable, secure, and AI-ready data products. The Director will work closely with executive leadership, product teams, and cross-functional partners to develop data strategies that drive operational efficiencies, enhance analytics, and support emerging AI and machine learning initiatives.





Key responsibilities include defining and executing the data architecture roadmap, implementing best practices for data governance, and leveraging cloud-based technologies, particularly within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem. The role also emphasizes operational excellence, including monitoring, incident response, automation, and cost management, ensuring high availability and performance of data platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in modern data architectures, AI-driven data pipelines, and experience working in regulated industries such as healthcare.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 12+ years of professional experience in related IT fields, with at least 4+ years in leadership roles involving planning, strategy, and team management. A master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent discipline is required. Certifications such as Azure Data Engineer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, and Databricks Qualified Data Engineer or ML Practitioner are highly desirable.

Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure data services (including Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Data Lake Storage, Event Hubs, Cosmos DB) and advanced proficiency with Databricks are essential. The candidate should have extensive experience designing scalable data architectures, including Lakehouse platforms, Medallion patterns, and AI-driven observability systems. Strong programming skills in Python, Scala, SQL, and .NET are necessary, along with a demonstrated ability to evaluate and adopt new technologies rapidly.

Experience in regulated sectors such as healthcare, financial services, or manufacturing is preferred.

Responsibilities

- Partner with executives, business leaders,



and technology stakeholders to define and execute the data architecture vision and strategic roadmap aligned with organizational goals.
- Drive innovation by adopting emerging technologies and enhancing platform capabilities to maintain a competitive edge in data engineering practices.
- Establish and enforce data engineering standards, best practices, and governance frameworks across the organization.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, AI-ready data products utilizing the Microsoft Azure ecosystem, ensuring efficient data ingestion, transformation, and storage.
- Lead advanced implementations of Databricks for large-scale data processing, machine learning workflows, and real-time analytics applications.
- Build, mentor, and lead a team of data engineering directors and technical specialists, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and technical excellence.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Operations, Data Science, Analytics, IT, and Business Intelligence—to deliver integrated data solutions that meet business needs.
- Develop talent development programs, establish technical career paths, and promote engineering excellence initiatives.
- Oversee the delivery of USPD data engineering products, ensuring high uptime, optimal performance, and cost efficiency.
- Implement comprehensive monitoring, alerting, incident response, and automation strategies to maintain mission-critical data systems.
- Partner with the Enterprise Data Platform team to implement automation, AI accelerators, and DevOps practices that improve deployment speed and operational reliability.
- Manage technology budgets, vendor relationships, and strategic partnerships to optimize total cost of ownership.
- Leverage AI to accelerate data pipeline development, optimize SQL performance, and implement self-healing data pipelines supporting petabyte-scale data operations.
- Ensure data platform security, compliance, and performance across all environments, adhering to industry regulations and best practices.
