All deckhands assigned to a watch, are responsible for following the direction of the Officer or Engineer of the watch they are partnered with. All ratings are to ensure that all their duties are undertaken in a protected manner.

Deckhands report to the Officer of the Watch during bridge watches and to the Chief Officer for routine and maintenance tasks with the following responsibilities:

- Completing tasks or routines assigned by an Officer diligently, safely and efficiently,
- Maintaining a lookout,
- Cleaning tanks,
- Keeping areas assigned to their charge clean,
- Attending mooring operations,
- Rigging pilot ladders,
- Taking stores, operating deck equipment,
- Securing equipment on the weather decks or other spaces and store rooms,
- Implementing the SMS as it pertains to safe deck and freight operations,




- Chipping and painting on deck and other parts of the vessel,
- Part of the emergency response team for various scenarios (oil spill, abandon ship, firefighting etc.).

Successful candidates for this position should hold the following valid Canadian certification:
- Bridge Watch Certificate

- STCW Basic Safety
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats

- Transport Canada Marine Medical

- Passenger Safety Management
- Company Specific Training, such as WHMIS, etc.
