POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Business Operations is responsible for the strategic oversight, performance monitoring, and operational support of Stellat’en First Nation’s existing business entities and economic ventures. This role ensures that all businesses operate efficiently, are financially sustainable, and align with the Nation’s long-term economic development goals and values.
The Director provides leadership in evaluating business performance, strengthening operational practices, and enhancing financial capacity, while fostering accountability and transparency across all business operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Business Oversight & Performance Management
- Plan, monitor and evaluate the performance of all Nation-owned businesses and partnerships.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting frameworks.
- Conduct regular business reviews, including operational, financial, and strategic assessments.
- Provide recommendations to improve profitability, sustainability, and efficiency.
2. Financial Review & Capacity Building
- Review financial statements, budgets, and forecasts for all business entities.
- Assess financial health and identify risks or opportunities.
- Support the development of strong financial management practices.
- Work collaboratively with finance teams or CFO to ensure accountability and compliance.
3. Operational Effectiveness
- Evaluate business operations to identify inefficiencies or gaps.
- Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Ensure businesses are operating in alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance to business managers on operational improvements.
4. Strategic Planning & Growth
- Contribute to the Nation’s economic development strategy.
- Identify opportunities for business growth, diversification, and partnerships.
- Support feasibility assessments and business case development for new initiatives.
- Align business activities with community priorities and long-term vision.
5. Governance & Reporting
- Prepare regular reports to Chief and Council / NHDC Board of Directors on business performance.
- Support governance structures by ensuring clarity in roles, responsibilities, and decision-making.
- Maintain transparency and accountability in all business activities.
6. Relationship Management
- Build and maintain solid working relationships with business managers, partners, and stakeholders.
- Act as a liaison between leadership and business entities.
- Support collaboration across departments and organizations.
7. Risk Management & Compliance
- Identify operational, financial, and strategic risks.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws,
regulations, and agreements.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in commerce, Finance, Economics, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in business management, financial oversight, or economic development.
- Experience working with or within First Nations communities and organizations is highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of financial statements, business operations, and performance metrics.
- Experience overseeing multiple business units or projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- May require travel between community, business locations, and partner organizations.
- Occasional evening or weekend work for meetings or community engagement.
COMPENSATION
- Salary will range from $95,000 – $110,000 / year.
