Description The Engineering Career Centre in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full time Limited Term Employer Specialist for approximately 24 months.
Reports to the Senior Manager, Experiential and Work Integrated Learning This position involves frequent professional contact, both in person and virtually, with industry contacts at all levels of organizations, from front-line engineering supervisors and human resources professionals to senior executives. The position develops and maintains local, national and international employer relationships and requires approximately 300 unique industry contacts annually.
Standard work hours apply, however flexibility to attend industry events and meet with industry contacts outside regular working hours is required. Access to a personal vehicle is required as local and occasional provincial travel is required, with mileage provided. This role represents the Engineering Career Centre (ECC) with industry and works collaboratively with academic faculty, students and ECC staff to address and resolve employer and student concerns.
This position will be primarily on campus, may be suitable for one remote day when operationally feasible and requires the ability to manage multiple deadlines and a high volume of work.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Employer Focused Accountabilities
- Developing and maintaining a network of industry contacts.
- Actively marketing to and recruiting new employers to be partners with the Engineering Career Centre.
- Identifying target industries and companies to proactively grow our industry partnerships for better jobs, better placement / postings rate, better meeting of student experience needs.
- Proactively monitor industry connections and WIL program performance (including student placement successes and challenges).
- Conducting internship site visits /check-ins with all employers and students who have an active placement, proactively supports employers and students to contribute to successful internship placements.
- Proactively addressing performance concerns from employers and investigates situations where students have raised concerns.
- Advising supervisors and HR representatives on creating quality engineering internships and summer opportunities.
- Providing advice, when requested, on engineering content of job postings and relevance / suitability for an Engineering student (Internship / summer position).
- Assisting the ECC Career Advisor in providing clear communication to students where a position may not qualify for engineering experience as per APEGA once determined by the Senior Manager
- Developing and securing sufficient internship and summer opportunities to support student demand and program placement targets, with consideration for anticipated growth in student enrolment and new programs.
- Maintaining knowledge of professional skills requirements and expectations of employers (technical & behavioral); industry market segments and available opportunities; and potential career paths for graduating engineers (undergrad and MEng).
- Participating in the development of plans to accommodate the needs of key partners, within the context of providing a successful and quality internship experience for students.
- Gathering feedback from employers, industry partners and students, and provides input to improve ECC processes.
Faculty Focused Accountabilities
- Developing and maintaining relationships with academic faculty to identify opportunities for industry engagement and employer partnerships.
- Actively participating with on-campus career services to stay abreast of new developments and training opportunities..
- Familiarity with the Schulich School of Engineering programs to develop and foster industry placements for undergraduate and MEng students.
- Required to develop working knowledge on the Elevate system (Orbis) to ensure accurate tracking and data analysis
- Assisting with all aspects of the Engineering Career Centre growth plan and actively contributing to the communication and marketing material for both internal and external stakeholders.
Engineering Career Centre (ECC) Accountabilities
- Working with the ECC Career Advisors, and providing industry informed guidance, when required, to support student success.
- Providing day-to-day supervision to ECC student staff, as required
- Providing feedback on content for workshops and acting as back-up for the ECC Career Advisors, when required to deliver career preparedness and internship information sessions
- Reviewing student response to job postings and incorporating employer feedback to support ECC Career Advisor and the WIL Coordinator in identifying opportunities to improve student engagement with postings.
- Providing an engineering perspective to the ECC Career Advisors on complex internship and workplace challenges, including supporting the resolution of student/employer concerns and, when required, the reassignment or reintegration of students displaced from their internships.
- Maintaining knowledge of international internship placement processes including work authorization requirements and cross-cultural communication practices as well as electronic data sharing practices (e.g. linking databases and posting information to websites).
Communication Accountabilities
- Reviewing Intern and Supervisor of Merit Award nominations and provide feedback on selection process.
- Reviewing marketing and communication materials and providing feedback and recommendations as the ECC expands programs related to career preparedness.
- Working with the ECC team members to provide feedback on survey questions and reviewing employer survey results to identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Proactively identifying and recommending improvements to optimize ECC programs and processes, undertaking initiatives that positively impact internship and summer placements based on direction from Schulich School of Engineering Leadership
- Reporting activities and statistics that contribute to the ECC program metrics and support the evaluation of program outcomes.
- Striving for continuous performance improvement and taking accountability for results.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- A degree in engineering is required, as well as a minimum of 8 years of engineering or technical experience in industry.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is required; candidates who are in the process of obtaining their designation may be considered.
- Working knowledge of the APEGA professional designation application process is considered an asset.
- Specific experience of more than 5 years managing or mentoring engineers in training (EIT) and/or new engineering graduates is considered a strong asset.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience with the engineering program
- Specific knowledge of the engineering curriculum and all the disciplines (including minors), and an awareness of industries employing engineers is critical to success in this position.
- Ability to act as an ambassador, interact with both students and professionals at all levels of organizations, and positively contribute to the Engineering Career Centre team is important.
- Ability to interview and draw information out of others, analyze information quickly, think creatively to resolve problems,
and act on or develop opportunities is required.
- 5+ years of demonstrated professional communication (email, letter, virtual, in-person and presentation skills) is required.
- Ability to connect independently (cold calling) with industry stakeholders and demonstrate comfort and skill in presenting in front of employers and students is considered an asset.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and work with faculty to advance the Engineering Career Centre.
