Background For approximately 30 years, MIRARCO’s Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) has supported the mining industry in understanding and managing challenging geomechanical conditions, particularly high-stress and rockburst-prone environments. The GRC works with the mining industry in rock mechanics, in-situ stress measurement, rock mass characterization, borehole surveying, ground support, seismicity, hydraulic fracturing, and numerical modelling.

What We Are Looking For The ideal candidate is practical, organized, reliable, and comfortable with hands-on work experience or knowledge in the following would be an asset:

· Rock mechanics, geotechnical, mining, civil, or materials testing.

· Drilling, core handling, or sample preparation.

· Mechanical tools and equipment.

· Basic electrical/electronic connections and instrumentation.

· Microsoft Excel, data collection, and technical documentation.

· The work may involve dust, water, drilling, rock cutting, heavy samples, and active mine environments.

A positive attitude and willingness to learn are essential. Specialized training in GRC testing methods, instrumentation, and quality-control procedures will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

· Prepare and test rock specimens for UCS, triaxial compression, Brazilian tensile, point-load, and drillability tests.

· Handle, log, cut, measure, and prepare drill core.

· Assist with drilling, borehole surveys, field instrumentation, and mine-site activities.

· Install and connect sensors, cables, instrumentation, and data-acquisition equipment.

· Collect, organize, process, and document laboratory and field data.

· Maintain laboratory equipment,



samples, tools, and work areas.

· Follow all applicable health and safety requirements.

Reports to: Senior Project Manager/Research Associate at GRC.

Qualifications A college diploma, university degree, technical background, or relevant practical experience in mining, civil/geotechnical, geological, mechanical, electrical, materials science, or a related field is preferred.

Candidates must

· Be legally eligible to work in Canada.

· Hold at least a valid Ontario G2 driver's licence.

· Be willing to travel to project and mine sites when required.

NOHFC Eligibility

This is a one-year, full-time contract position funded in part through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation Workforce Development Program.

Applicants must

(1) Be a recent entrant to the workforce, be transitioning to a new career, or be unemployed/underemployed and entering a recent field;

(2) Be at least 18 years old;

(3) Be legally eligible to work in Canada;

(4) Not have previously participated in an NOHFC-funded internship under the 2020 Mandate;

(5) Once hired, reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
