Be the Go-To Fixer at Surf Grove
We’re looking for a dependable, hands-on Lead Maintenance team member who is handy, resourceful and comfortable troubleshooting a wide range of maintenance issues. From plumbing and carpentry to preventative maintenance, storm preparation and the unexpected challenges that come with operating a busy campground on the West Coast, no two days will look exactly the same.
This role is ideal for someone who takes ownership of their work, can work independently, and enjoys the satisfaction of keeping a property running safely and smoothly. Staff accommodation is available.
About Surf Grove
Surf Grove is a beachfront campground located steps from Cox Bay in Tofino. We’re passionate about creating an exceptional camping experience and sharing the best of the West Coast with guests.
Behind that experience is a property that needs to work. Our maintenance team plays an important role in keeping our facilities, campsites, equipment and common areas protected, functional and looking their best throughout the year.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Property Operations Manager, the Lead Maintenance team member is responsible for the safe, reliable and professional upkeep of Surf Grove’s property, facilities and equipment.
This is a hands-on role that includes preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, general repairs, seasonal projects and responding to maintenance issues as they arise. You’ll work independently for much of the day while staying closely connected with management, Guest Services and the Property Operations team.
Strong judgment is important. We’re looking for someone who can determine what needs immediate attention, what can be planned for later, what they can confidently repair themselves and when a certified trade or specialized contractor needs to be brought in.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Maintenance & Repairs
- Complete routine property inspections and preventative maintenance to catch issues before they become larger problems.
- Perform general repairs including basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, caulking, hardware replacement and minor equipment troubleshooting.
- Keep guest facilities safe and operational, including washrooms, showers, laundry areas, common spaces,
campsite amenities, doors, locks, lighting and plumbing fixtures.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests, prioritizing emergencies, safety concerns and issues that directly impact our guests.
- Troubleshoot problems and determine the most practical solution while recognizing when work requires a certified trade or specialized contractor.
Property & Grounds
- Maintain pathways, drainage, signage, picnic tables and campground facilities.
- Regularly inspect high-use areas and equipment to identify wear, damage or potential safety concerns.
- Complete painting, staining, sealing and exterior repairs as required.
- Help keep work areas, maintenance spaces and the overall property clean, organized and professionally presented.
Preventative & Seasonal Maintenance
- Help prepare the property and seasonal facilities for spring opening.
- Monitor plumbing, drainage, lighting, doors, locks and other high-use systems throughout peak summer operations.
- Complete winterization and fall property preparation as required.
- Inspect and prepare storm-exposed areas ahead of high winds and severe weather.
- Assist with larger maintenance projects and property improvements during quieter operating periods.
Organization & Communication
- Review outstanding maintenance items and prioritize daily work.
- Keep tools, equipment, supplies and maintenance areas organized and in valuable working order.
- Monitor parts and supply inventory and communicate what needs to be ordered.
- Maintain clear records of completed and outstanding maintenance work.
- Provide updates on repairs or projects that require additional work or follow-up.
- Assist contractors and service providers by providing access, explaining issues and helping minimize disruption to guests.
- Work closely with management, property operations and guest services to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and a 5-star guest experience.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- A hands-on problem solver who enjoys figuring out how things work and how to fix them.
- General knowledge of property maintenance and repair.
- Basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to safely and confidently use hand tools, power tools, ladders and general maintenance equipment.
- Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining good communication with the team.
- Highly responsible, reliable and organized.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality of your work.
- Comfortable working outdoors in rain, wind, mud and changing West Coast conditions.
- Professional communication skills and the ability to interact positively with guests, coworkers, contractors and management.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Previous property maintenance, campground or hospitality experience is an asset.
- RV/ trailer maintenance and troubleshooting experience is an asset.
- First Aid, WHMIS, equipment-operation or trade-related training is an asset.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Surf Grove operates year-round, but the work changes considerably with the seasons.
Spring is focused on preparing the property for peak season and addressing winter wear and storm damage. Summer requires quick troubleshooting and prioritization when maintenance issues impact guests. Fall and winter create opportunities for preventative maintenance, winterization and larger property improvement projects.
This is a role for someone who likes variety and takes pride in being able to look around the property at the end of the day and see what they accomplished. Some days will follow the maintenance plan; others will require you to change course because a toilet is leaking, a door won’t lock or a storm has other ideas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be physically fit and able to lift moderately heavy items and perform movements such as bending, stooping, kneeling and climbing stairs or ladders when required. The position involves repetitive tasks and standing or walking for extended periods of time.
This is an active, hands-on position with regular outdoor work in rain, wind, mud and changing coastal conditions.
READY TO JOIN THE TEAM?
If you’re dependable, resourceful, take pride in your work and like being the person people can count on to solve a problem, we’d love to hear from you.
Send us your resume and tell us a little about your maintenance experience and why you’d be a outstanding fit for Surf Grove.
